5 Ways to Cope With peak Wedding Season

You have worked up to this moment. Wanting your summer order book to be bursting at the seams. But you are here, after all the effort you have put in and it’s hard. It’s tougher than you imagined it to be. You are working all the hours under the sun and more. You feel guilty for not being as “slick” with your brides as you would like to be. You feel guilty for not being with your family and friends. You feel guilty for not doing the washing, have a spotless house and for using dry shampoo for the fourth day in a row. You feel guilty for eating a snickers and a packet of crisps for lunch which you don’t manage to eat at lunchtime but at 4pm. You are in peak wedding season!

I don’t really have any magic solution for you with this other than to say…

…you are not alone in this

…it is totally worth it

…you are doing a fantastic job, even if you don’t have a boss telling you that (you gotta have a word with her!)

…your brides LOVE what you do and you are probably unnecessarily worrying over things

…it will get easier when you are out of this season of business

…recognise what you are doing and reward yourself!

You see, you will have peaks and troughs in your business. You will be busier some weeks/months than others, so you have to accept that that is a fact because of the industry you work in. For some wedding professionals, this is less of an issue but if you are an on the day supplier then you will have busy and quiet times and you need to accept and flex to that. These are your business seasons (read more about what I mean by that here).

I just wanted you to know that you ARE doing a great job and don’t let the guilt get you down. Focus on what you are doing, knowing it is what you love and see the shiny side to those late nights. Who needs sleep anyway!

I have a part two to this which will come next week to help you, but for now, know you are doing great.

If these kind words are leaving you feeling “Yes, Emma, that is all lovely but let’s get real…what can I do from a practical perspective?” then I have 4 things that may help. I know that you will feel like punching me in the face when you read these because they are super obvious and super annoying, BUT they work!

5 Practical Things you can do

1. Manage expectations (and remove the guilt) by putting an out of office on your emails to say something along the lines of

“Thank you for your email blah blah blah. I am in peak wedding season here at [xx] HQ and my heart and soul is going into every bride and groom order that is in my order book for the next few weeks. I love what I do and am currently stuck elbow deep in [something relevant for your business i.e cake mix/stationery pretties/sashes and bows…] which means there may be a slightly longer response time to your email.

If you are a booked bride know that you are a priority for me at the moment and I will be in touch with you about your order.

If you are enquiring then please bear with me, your email is super important to me and I will get back to you but it will be in a [x] days time. In the meantime, you may want to come and follow me over on [choose your social media platform of choice] to see what I am up to.”

This out of office will not only manage the expectations of your brides it will also help you to feel less stressy about not replying super quickly and it will grow your social media following.

2. Put a pipeline together of all your wedding orders and quotes

Do you have an overview picture of the wedding orders you need to deliver and the enquiries you need to chase? Having a pipeline of all of these will make it clearer for you to see exactly what you have got to work on and when. Having this clarity will help you see where you have gaps, where you are super busy and this will help you plot out your time. To do a pipeline, simply grab a piece of paper and list under each of these headings what you have:

  • Orders in progress (Orders you are physically working on right now)
  • Proofs Out/With client (Orders where you are waiting for the bride to come back to you)
  • Orders coming in the next 3 months (The next batch of orders you have to work on)
  • Orders coming down the track (All orders outside of the 3 month window)
  • Enquiries out (All enquiries that you have replied to that need chasing)
  • Completed orders – follow up (All orders that you need to follow up on with testimonials etc)

3. Choose a set day a week where you do your admin, ordering and generally sorting sh*t out.

If you know that Wednesday – Sunday you are busy sorting weddings for the weekend then chose a Monday or a Tuesday to do your wedmin. This is where you get all the tasks done that you need to do, but instead of trying to fit time in in between making/creating/delivering you are doing it all on one day. You can write all the emails that you need to send that week and save them into your drafts so that on the day you need to send them, you can just go into your drafts and press “send”. This makes you feel less stressed and more in control of your bride relationships. It is better for you to email them with an update than for your brides to email you.

4. Plan out your week.

I KNOW that this is possibly one of the most annoying things people can say to you when you busy BUT it works! Sitting down at the start or at the end of your week and getting crystal clear on what NEEDS to get done and what you would LIKE to get done means you can be very intentional with your actions. It means you can see how much time you have to work on your business and this will help you get focused If you just sit down to do “some work” one day, you will faff and waste time thinking about what you need to do instead of just doing.

5. Keep a track of where you are with each order.

I am sure you have an order process for each bridal order that you have but make sure it is up to date with tasks, deadlines and actions. Once you have each bridal order set out, you will feel so much more organised and in control of what you need to do. You will feel like a proper business woman rather than a hot mess of a one. Well less of a hot mess anyway. If you don’t have an order process set out – this needs to be something for you to prioritise. It doesn’t need to be fancy or over the top – just a simple “do this do that” workflow of how you manage your orders so you can feel in control.

GUILT

The last point I want to make in this blog post is about the guilt I know you are feeling when it comes to your personal life. Whatever guilt it may be and whoever you feel you are letting down, just speak with them and let them know that you know it is tough during this peak period but it will get better. Don’t try and people please and burn yourself into the ground doing that, make your loved ones aware of what is going on so they can be forgiving because they will be, I promise. Then, make sure that the time you do spend with your loved ones is well spent. Instead of sitting down in front of the telly, go for a walk and actually talk. Make a mobile dinner and go and sit in the park and get some space and give yourself 100% to that moment and that time. Leave your phone at home. The world will not come crashing down, I promise. If you feel guilty for your partner, dedicate one night a week which is “date night” and do something together that you can both look forward to. These little pockets of time can make you feel so much better so be intentional and the guilt will feel less.

Remember what I said at the start – you re doing an amazing job and it is all worth it.

You got this.

The Little Joys

What makes you smile?

Either a little smirk, a little flutter in the heart or a full-on, big, double chin inducing smile?

When did you last do something that was for you, that made you smile?

For me, the little joys in life are what makes my days special. Because every day is special. We can hold off from doing things, from opening things, from eating things because we are waiting for a special occasion or some magical time when it feels like we deserve it. We deserve little joys every day because that is what makes life special. And when we acknowledge that every day is special, we start to enjoy every day much more.

This is also true for your wedding business. The little stuff matters. The little things you can do to induce a smile on your bride’s face, to make them giggle, to make them smile from the heart, to make them realise that you are a supplier that understands what love means to them, what their marriage means to them.

I have two tasks for you this week.

  1. Think about what makes you smile and do it every day. It may something as simple as buying a posy of flowers and having them on your desk whilst you work. It may be lighting a candle when you sit down at the end of the day. It may be buying AND READING that favourite magazine that you haven’t for ages. It may be writing a letter to a friend or picking the phone up and having a good old chat with someone you haven’t spoken to for ages. It may be sitting down and doing craft, even for just 10 minutes a day. Make time for the little joys in your world.

  2. The second task is to think about what you can do in your business to help create the same feeling for your brides. Perhaps something you could introduce to the service you offer them. Perhaps a little email you could send them to make them smile. Think about what you can do to be memorable.

So, make time for those little joys because life is worth it. Every day is worth it.

Allow yourself to be where you are

Allow yourself to BE where you ARE

We are always looking at what we want to do, what we haven’t got around to doing, what is wrong, what we want to change, what we need to do.

Why not, just for this week, instead, we focus on what we HAVE. I say we here because I will do it too.

Allow yourself to BE where you are.

Acknowledge that you weren’t always here and what you have done in the past has gotten you here. This means that in a months’ time, in six months’ time, in one year’s time, you will also be in a different place.

“Yes. I am happy here. I am proud to be here. I know I am here because of the work I have done and even though there is more to do, I know I am going in the right direction.”

As I sit here this Sunday evening soaking in the last bit of the sunshine, listening to the birds singing and the smell of BBQs in the air, I feel content. I feel happy. I feel blessed to be here, writing to you, in this moment right now.

Do I have things on the to-do list that haven’t been done? Yes.

Do I have things that I need to get sorted? Yes.

But I think we will always have those things. I know I always will because, even though I am organised and planned about what I do, sometimes things can go off track a little. Not a lot, just a little. And this little can make you feel guilty (a little bit like my note to you last Sunday).

The inspiration for this message really comes from the fact that really soon I will be having a baby and, being totally honest, I had hoped to have had more things laid out and done. I was hoping to have had six months of blog posts written, I was hoping to have had a good chunk of my social media sorted, I was hoping to have had a few things set up in my business before I went off to have a baby. I was hoping to have launched my new brand and website (which is still in development). But I didn’t quite get around to doing all the (nonurgent) things and after a mild meltdown earlier in the week, my husband reminded me that it was all OK. That I had everything done that I needed to do and that everything was going to be OK. Because it will be. I know that. I trust that. I love working in my business and that is not going to change, I will just need to do it around a baby but that is the whole reason why I started my business in the first place.

So, I am happy where I am. I am proud with what I have got ticked off the to-do list. I am where I am and nothing can change that. Stressing will certainly not help.

So, allow yourself to be where you are and know that someone will always be looking up at you thinking you have your shiz together as you are looking up at someone else doing the same.

Be happy with what you have achieved.

Be grateful for where you are.

Acknowledge all you have done.

Give yourself a big fat slap on the back!

You got this.

Guilt

Guilt is something we all feel.

Guilt that we haven’t done something we were “supposed” to

Guilt that we didn’t spend enough time planning something

Guilt that we didn’t call our friend back when we said we would

Guilt that our mind was somewhere else when you were trying to be present in another moment

Guilt that we didn’t tick off all the things on the to-do list

Guilt that something took longer than we thought

Guilt that we put off doing that act of self-care yet again

Guilt that we are eating toast for lunch for the third day in a row

Guilt that we didn’t look perfect, or try harder, or be there more

Guilt that the washing is still sitting in the washing machine

Guilt comes up in business. It comes up in life. It comes up inside of us.

I am no expert AT ALL in this topic and I know that guilt is a big old thing that some people need to unpick and resolve but in today’s world I think we feel guilty about ourselves more and more because the standard of what we “should” be like seems to be getting more and more, higher and higher.

The pressure we put on ourselves is higher and higher.

We need to give ourselves a break I reckon.

Every Sunday when I sit down to write these emails I look back on my week and use any inspiration from the week to come up with my topic. This week I have been feeling guilty because I have had to be selfish and I have had to focus on the things that are important to me right now and this meant that some things I wanted to do haven’t been done. Looking back on my week this made me feel guilty but only I am making myself feel like that. No one else. Only I am making myself feel bad that I didn’t, for example, send my Sunday Love Note out last week. Did you even notice? I would love you to say yes but in all realistic life, you probably didn’t!

Last Sunday’s email didn’t go out because I didn’t write it.

It was a beautiful bank holiday here in the UK, I needed to rest and recoup for a busy few weeks ahead and it was my birthday so I decided to take a digital detox and that meant not turning my laptop on for three whole days. A luxury I know! But a luxury that I could control. I built my business to compliment my life and when I realised this, the guilt stopped (a little).

The love note here really is to say stop giving yourself such a hard time.

Let yourself off.

Know that we all feel guilt and most of the time (OK, not all) it is only YOU making YORURSELF feel guilty.

So be kind to yourself.

Have a beautiful Sunday evening and if this email sparks you then open up your journal and write it out. Start next week with a fresh attitude. I know that is what I am going to do.

When things go wrong

Sometimes things just don’t go to plan

Do you ever have one of those days or weeks when everything seems to go against you Emma? Things happen that you hadn’t planned for, things take longer than you expect them to, things go wrong, things that you cannot control take over. You just have one of “those” weeks.

I kind of feel like that today as I write this and as I look back on my week just gone (a little ritual I do every week with a cuppa and my trusted Wedding Biz Planner).

Some fabulous things happened this week, like really awesome things, but, even though I am aware of them I always lean towards the negative. I always get fed up about the things that happened that were not really in my control at all.

I naturally tend to focus on what went wrong.

This could be the learner in me. I am always looking to learn and when things go (technical term) t*ts up I want to know how I could make it better.

It could also be the perfectionist in me (which is something that I know holds me back). Not saying that everything I do is perfect, far from it, but I always strive to do my best work so when that doesn’t happen, I get frustrated with myself.

It could be the negative nelly part of me coming out with a louder voice than the one that blows my own trumpet (I have never been very good at that bit of being a human, I don’t think many of us are).

Do you resonate with any of these Emma?

What is the point of this rambling?

Really it is to say that we are all the same. If you feel like you have had a rubbishy week then it is normal. Sometimes you can’t put your finger on why you feel like you have had a rubbish week. It could be just the way you feel, the time of the month or (if you are a sensitive soul) the moon phases.

But only you can identify whether you want to continue to feel like that or, instead, whether you want to release the week and start next week fresh. Only you can change your mood. Only you can reframe a situation so it becomes less frustrating. Only you can shape how you want to feel.

Yes, you may have external factors that add to your mood but only you can control whether you allow them to infiltrate into your mood.

So as you sit here reading this blog post, think about out how you want to feel tomorrow when you wake up. What mood do you choose to be in? Because it is a choice, no matter what is thrown at you.

Making time to feel good is not a luxury

Making time to feel good is not a luxury

*Cue the eye roll*

I know you are reading this and doing the eye roll and I am not judging you for this because I would have done exactly the same thing just a few months ago. I used to get super frustrated by business owners I followed making out they had the “perfect” day every day.

Life is not perfect. We all have our restrictions and our own freedoms. You may not be able to spend an hour reading, meditating, doing yoga, painting – whatever the thing is that you would like to introduce into your days, every day.

But you don’t need to spend hours doing it.

10 minutes is all you need.
3 minutes sometimes.

Creativity is really important in the way I work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Even though I am not physically making pretty things to sell (well, my downloadable workbooks are always pretty snazzy) I need to find time to have some creative play so that I am inspired to do what I do. It has always been an important part of my life.

Even just for 10 or 20 minutes. A nice little break. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For the past week, instead of flicking through Instagram Stories during my lunch break, I have spent time doing something creative. The image here on the banner of this email is a little painting I did in the week. Just by spending 15 mins doing this I felt refreshed and ready for my afternoon.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I used to see this time as “wasted time”. I used to see doing things like this as a luxury. I even used to put planning into the luxury box – thinking I didn’t have time to do it and I should just take action. Planning is not a luxury. Over planning and getting stuck is, but setting out the path you are going to follow is not.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I have grown as a business owner I have realised what things work for me to keep me going. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Meditation, journaling, creativity, taking time out, getting fresh air, knitting, yoga, reading – these are all things that make me feel good so I make sure I get at least ONE of them into my every day because I know that they will fuel me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

10 minutes is all you need.
3 minutes sometimes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just make sure you make time for YOU and for the things that fuel YOU. You will be a better business owner for it, I promise.

Make a list of things you would like to introduce into your day and for the next week try and spend at least 5 minutes every day doing it and see how different you feel. It will make you feel MUCH better than flicking through Instagram or Facebook, I promise. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here is to creativity and feeling inspired! Make it part of your week next week.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lots of love for you on this Sunday.

P.S. If you want to make your business building journey easier, join me for my free online workshop on 26 March at 11am (click here to register) and it will help you to create a simple plan to grow your wedding business which means you have more time to do the things you want to but don’t have the time to do right now (or so you think).

The secret to success (and it’s no what you think!)

Ok, so there is no real secret potion that is going to make you super successful, (if you do find one though can you promise that you will let me know?!) But, after working in my business I can only talk about what has worked for me.

And this one thing has made a humungous difference to the way my business works out, and my life for that matter.

It is incorporating habits into my every day and tracking them.

Simple eh!

Perhaps not as simple as it sounds…especially at this time of year. When a new year comes we have this urge to say that we want to change EVERYTHING all at once. This does not work (read my blog post on this here and how I handle it). We fail not because we don’t have the desire but because we try and change too many things at one time (read more about that here).

We need to focus on introducing one or two new things at a time, otherwise the overwhelm strikes and well, we all know what happens then…

Successful people have good habits [Download a free habit tracker here >>>]. Habits that help them become the person they want to be, the business owner they want to be, the mother, the wife, the daughter, the care, the [whatever hat you are wearing today].  But it is not just about setting habits, it’s about tracking them and seeing when they are not working for you.

As an example.

I have introduced many habits into my life really consciously over the last 12 months or so and they happen pretty much every day. I notice from tracking that it is the weekend that these habits don’t get done. I can choose what happens here, I can either change something about my weekends so that they do get done or I accept that my weekends are different and that’s OK. Only by tracking can we see where we need to make change, or when we need to celebrate that we have stuck to it!

What habits am I tracking at the moment?

DAILY:

  • Journal
  • Meditate
  • Yoga/Pilates
  • Daily check-in with my body and mind
  • Take vitamins
  • Tidy one area of the house
  • Do clear to do list
  • Transfer savings daily (even if it just a £1)

WEEKLY:

  • Clean down emails
  • Clean down download

There are quite a few here BUT remember, I have been introducing these into my world over the past 12 months or so.

ACTION TIME

So, what habits do you want to introduce into your biz and your life?

If you are unsure, just try one thing and be as specific as you can.

For example “Drink more water” Try and set HOW many glasses you want to drink – make it measureable

The example I use above “Tidy one area of the house”. That works for me because it could mean an entire room or it could mean to tidy the clutter off the sides. My intention here is to maintain a tidy and organised home (if you don’t open the drawers!).

Get your free download habit tracker: DOWNLOAD HERE

Inside of The Wedding Biz Planner, there is a monthly habit tracker that you can use as part of your regular planning to help you to stay accountable.  This is just one part of the planning system – you can read more here >>>

For you to take intentional action in your business that will cultivate growth you need to spend time each month to set out what you are going to do, in line with your goals. Remind yourself what the 3 core priorities are for you that month, based on your big plan. Plot out what commitments you have in the monthly calendar. Keep a monthly master to do list which you can start to pre-fill in throughout the year. Brainstorm ideas for what marketing you are going to do that month and lay it out in the content calendar. Track habits in the habit tracker for you so you can start to cultivate habits that support you in your business. Finally, before we move into weekly planning you have space to record what wedding bookings you have this month – a flexible space for you to use these pages as best suits your business.

How to Find Your Word of the Year

Choose Your Word of The Year for 2018

In today’s blog post, I am talking about how you can choose your word of the year, if it is something that you feel will work for you.

Having a word of the year is something I have done for the past few years and again something that I will do again this year because it benefited me so much. Your word of the year is kinda what is sounds like – it is a word (or a couple) that you live by as you go through your year. It is about how you want to feel, how you want to be as you go through your year.

It is kind of a replacement for resolutions. You see with resolutions there is success or failure – you either make them happen or you don’t. And if you fail (which, let’s be honest – who has EVER stuck 100% to a resolution if there were being really honest with yourself) then you give up and feel the same as you did the year before. With a word of the year you use it as a filter for everything you do, and you can flex the meaning to what feels right.

Choosing your word may be simple for you, or it may be hard.  To help you, this is how I choose mine:

#1

  • I think about what I want more of in my world. What did I feel was lacking last year in my business and in my life? What do I crave?
  • I think about what the year has planned for me – are there any key events that are happening that will affect your world in a big way?
  • I think about what felt out of whack last year, out of balance. This normally comes up for me when I reflect on my past year. If you need a hand with this, grab the free reflect 2017 workbook here >>> bit.ly/2017reflectionworkbook
  • I think about how I want to develop personally, how do I want to BE as I move through 2018.
  • I think about where my business is and what stage I am in on my journey – what do I need to focus on to move to the next level?

To find these answers, I like to journal on the prompts above. For me, journaling allows me to free flow onto the page with no filter and no judgment. Journaling is a time that gives me space to let my thoughts wander, and I often get my best ideas from this.

Sometimes, if journaling doesn’t work for me, I go for a walk and just let the questions ponder in my head and I normally come back with some insights. I think about these questions whilst doing everyday activities like washing up, when I am in the shower, doing my hair or putting my make up on. These mindless activities help me to find the answers I am looking for (most of the time!)

#2

Once I have journaled on these prompts I look back through my journal and highlight any words that stand out to me. Anything that feels right.

#3

I then think about what that word really means to me. How it makes me feel. Does it excite me or not? Does it make me feel nervous or anxious? I let this sit with me for a while and see what keeps coming up, what feels right.

It may be that some words can be covered by an overarching word. For example, you will see when I talk below about the words I chose for 2017, one of those was simplicity and for me, this covered a ton of things that I wanted to feel in my business and in my life, including organised, ease, white space. Choosing this one word meant all of these things to me.

You have to tune into your intuition with this and don’t force it. If you haven’t got your word sorted by 1 Jan, your year is not going to fall apart! I spend the first week of Jan doing this work because I find that it works best for me.

Why I chose the words I did for 2017

For me last year I had three words. One was a main word and two where supporting.

They were:

SIMPLICITY // I felt that my world had just got too complicated – too full. My house needed a good declutter and so did my business. I wanted to simplify what I did to make everything easier. Ease was an important focus for me and Simplicity encased that in the meaning that it had for me. White Space was important for me and again, Simplicity covered that for me. All year I use this word to draw me back and it worked. Seriously it worked. When I did anything in my home I had the intention to simplify it – did I really need another duvet cover? I would only buy it if there was reason and I would replace it will an old one so as to not clutter my space. When I did anything in my business I looked at whether I was doing it in the simplest way. Often, I was not so I made some big changes and this covered another aspect that I wanted to deal with – organisation. Simplicity did this for me.

NURTURE // I felt that last year I needed more nurture. Nurture of my clients, my business and myself. I had built a really strong and loyal group of clients and I really wanted to nurture them more – give more and really see them grow. I felt that my business needed a little bit of love and nurture instead of working it too hard and getting exhausted. And I felt like I needed more nurture in myself, in my body. I had been working too hard and not looking after myself and this was starting to show to me and I needed to change that. Every time I did anything in my world, I would ask myself “Will this Nurture me?”. This included what food I put into my mouth, what people I spent time with, what activities I did. It has a major impact on me and my life.

GROWTH // Growth was the third word I chose for 2017 and this linked to my personal growth as an entrepreneur and my business. I wanted to see continual growth with my business and this was the next logical step in my business journey.  Growth to me didn’t just mean financial growth, it meant growth in the strength of my business, the audience I had drawn to me and growth in my content and visibility.

Your Turn!

I hope this has inspired you to think of creating a word, or two, to carry with you through 2018.  For clients that I have worked 1:1 with and in my coaching group, this was a task that you would have been set to do so look back and see what your word was last year and what difference it made. If you didn’t live by it, make this your year to do it because it has a bit impact, trust me.

So, go and discover your word(s) of 2018 and if you need some help or inspiration, I have a one-pager that has a list of words on it to help you be inspired to find your own.

10 Questions I ask myself to review my past year

Reflection is a constant theme in my business, it is something I do weekly, monthly and quarterly. It is so important to reflect on the year gone by before you go into making goals and plans for the coming year because until you know where YOU are right now, you cannot make plans that will get you to the next step, whatever that step may be.

I always spend the first week of January getting myself prepped and ready for the year ahead, and here are the 10 questions I ask myself when I am reflecting. I grab my journal and just write away.  If you want these questions in a handy workbook, you can grab a free one here >>> http://bit.ly/2017reflectionworkbook

The Questions I ask myself:

  1. What did I achieve in 2017?
  2. What worked for me in 2017?
  3. What was my proudest moment?
  4. What lessons did I learn and what was my biggest lesson?
  5. What challenges did I face?
  6. What held me back?
  7. What was out of balance for me?
  8. What do I want to see change in 2018?
  9. what do I need to release?
  10. I also do a financial review to see what has sold well, what has been profitable in my business and where the gaps are.

How can you design your 2018?

Having worked with hundreds of wedding business owners, I see common things crop up time and time again when it comes to planning the business growth game plan. There are a handful of things that stop my clients from achieving what I KNOW (and they know) they are capable of.

No more.

I want to help you to plan your 2018, the GOOD way.

You are a creative (in this industry you have to be) so you need to find that balance of being creatively fuelled in your business WHILST working within lose boundaries. We need boundaries because otherwise brides take you for granted, your time slips away from you & you end up working way more than you ever wanted to when you started out.

Planning in the traditional way can make you feel a little sweaty as a creative…feeling boxed in and structured. But it doesn’t need to be. If you think of planning as curating instead.

To Curate means to Organise, to take charge off. To draw together things that make sense.

When we look at curating your year, we are essentially designing it to fit you. We are drawing together things that make sense, that work together, that create a cohesion between what you are doing to grow and nurture your wedding business, and your future. Rather than a mish-mash of different actions that don’t work together.

When you start to think of planning in this way, it makes it fun.

What if you could have your entire 2018 sorted by the 12 January?

Join me and a group of wonderful wedding business owners in my Curate your 2018 (Read more here) 5 Day Online Mastermind where, after the five days you will have:

  • A list of what projects/products you want to develop/launch over 2018
  • A month by month plan that will keep you accountable
  • A content calendar that will keep you visible to your couples
  • A new working schedule that will make you super-efficient
  • A clear view of the year in a simple two-page action plan
  • A newfound focus and determination that will keep you focused.

The workshop costs just £40 and starts 8 January for 5 days. If you cannot join in live, you can catch up when you have the time and you have year-long access to the content, and of course, a beautiful workbook to guide you. When you sign up, you will also get a beautiful wall planner sent in the post for you to keep you accountable which is worth £10.

Why is reflection important in the growth of your wedding business?

I just wanted to explain why I think reflection at this time of year is so important, indeed reflecting throughout the year is a critical part of your growth but there is always a freshness, a clean slate feeling that comes with the end of a year and the beginning of a new one that deserves extra attention.

Reflecting helps you to appreciate just how far you have come in your business building journey. Not just the practical and tangible stuff like the big things like a new website, a full order book or your first ever booking but also the stuff you cannot see but that has a big impact, such as your mindset and your confidence in business.

GET YOUR FREE 2017 REFLECTION WORKBOOK HERE >>>

Reflecting makes you feel grateful for all you have done and achieved, which I am certain will be more than you think! But it also helps you to take stock of the here and now so that you can plan for 2018 from the best possible place – where you are NOW. Knowing what held you back during 2017, knowing what challenges you faced, knowing the good and the bad stuff helps to make sure you make a 2018 gameplan that will work for YOU in YOUR business.

Because every-single-business will have a different set of circumstances, a different goal, a different path to follow that is bespoke to them. Yes, there is a guiding map but the actions you need to take in 2018 will be specific to YOU in YOUR business and until you know what barriers and challenges you faced in 2017, you cannot really plan effectively for your 2018. If you need help planning for your 2018, read more about the Curate 2018 Workshop that is starting for 5 days on 8 Jan. For just £40 you can map out your entire year and get support in just 5 days. read more here >>> http://www.weddingbizcoach.com/curate2018/

What happened to you in 2017 happened in the way it did for a reason. It is all part of the journey, part of the lessons that make up your business, lessons that make your business (and you) stronger and more resilient if you spend time looking at what they are. The workbook I have created for you will help you to do just that so if you haven’t downloaded them here it is again >>> http://www.weddingbizcoach.com/reflection2017workbook/

Reflecting is a key part of the growth of your wedding business so make the time to do this.

Loneliness Stole my Creativity

Loneliness.

22 SEPTEMBER 2017 // REAL LIFE

I feel a little bit vulnerable about sharing this blog post and it has been sitting in my blog drafts for over a week. I stopped pressing send because I thought it would make me seem weak. I stopped pressing send because I thought it may look as if I was being ingenuine and measured, and I really, hand on heart am not (and I know the people who really know me will know this anyway). But, I decided to press send anyway, because, after a few conversations I have had this week, I know it will help the people it needs to.

The subject is loneliness.

I wrote this post the first day I got back from a really beautiful two week holiday. We got back late on the Wednesday and Thursday was a back to normal day. My husband, Tom, went to work and so did I. I sat at my desk, opened my emails and opened the to-do list notebook I have updated before I went away. I had planned in a day of grace before getting straight back into client work, but, as I sat there I have the heady mix of loneliness and overwhelm wash over me (with a pinch of WTF am I doing!).

I felt so lonely.

I had been with Tom every day for the last two weeks and we had had the best holiday ever. Really. I was so full of gratitude for the time we had spent together and I knew I was super lucky to have my business. To be able to walk from the bedroom to the office and I was there. To be able to do what I love every day and not have to deal with corporate politics that used to make me DREAD going back to work after my holidays, back in my corporate days. I WANTED to go back to work because I love what I do so much.

I didn’t deserve to feel down.

This was the first holiday since having my business that I had a full two weeks off, with no “Oh, I just need to do this quickly” and no guilt, as my clients knew I was away and I had gotten everything I needed to get done, done, before I went.

I didn’t deserve to feel low. But I did.

When you feel like this and you don’t have the company of other people around you, all those mind monkies start jumping around and the self-doubt thoughts come creeping in. It is easy to spiral. Having no one around to talk to can make it worse.

I tried to shake the feeling.

I did some meditation, and some journaling – two tools which always help me. I got up and had a boogie and (what felt like) my 10th cup of coffee but I couldn’t shake the loneliness. So, I went for a walk to the local park and felt even more lonely.

I was happy when Tom came back that night.

One of the reasons I halted from posting this was because I said it made me feel ingenuine and manufactured (which it really isn’t) and the reason is because the one thing that got me out of this spiral of self-doubt, of what the flip and I doing, was the community I have around me. The personal community I have with my business besties (you know who you are and you are flippin awesome!) and the community of wonderfully amazing clients I work with inside my programme and my Wedding Biz Club. These are real people but the connection is online. I was always dubious of “online friends” but oh my days, they have saved me on many occasions – you can be more vulnerable and more open and honest online because no one judges. Everyone is in the same place.

These people just GET it. We are all people growing our business, creating our dreams – some are a few more steps ahead and some are just starting out. As a teacher I need to be teaching from a place of genuine heart, that is core to me as The Wedding Biz Coach, and I paused from posting this blog post because I thought it would make me look weak, and out of control.

But I am not, I am just real and I am on the same journey as you are, just a few paces ahead.

You see, no one gets it, unless you are in it. I had no right to be down, I had just had an amazing holiday and I get to wake up every day and do what I love and what I am passionate about, working with women who I genuinely love. I have no right to feel down. But being your own boss Is hard when you are walking the walk on your own, fighting those self-doubt fairies on your own, when no-one in your family or friendship circle truly get it.

It’s not their fault, they just haven’t walked the path so cannot feel the bumps in the road.

I am afraid I don’t have a magic wand to fix this for you if you feel like this every now and then (or more often than not!), but my big piece of heartfelt advice from one dream maker to another is reach out and get that community. Get people around you who understand the roller-coaster of emotion that is being the self-employed person, the boss, the CEO, the entrepreneur – whatever you want to call yourself.

As I say, I halted posting this because I didn’t want it to look like I was saying “Hey, you need community because you are sad and alone – Join The Wedding Biz Club blah blah blah!” It made me feel like it was part of an ikky marketing strategy, but it really isn’t.

It is true life.  It is real life. It is a true story.

And I know that there are some of you out there at the moment who feel like this because the kids have either started school, or gone back to school and life has returned to you and your desk. You expected to be excited to get back into routine (anyone else crave that, or is it just me!) but instead you feel lonely. You feel like you should feel revved up and raring to go, but you feel alone.

I should have been revved up and raring to go the first day I got back! After a beautiful, relaxing and blessed holiday. And I was in a way, tons of new ideas, lots of plans for the end of the year made whilst soaking up the Sicilian Sun, but that feeling of loneliness stole my drive and replaced it with overwhelm and that little familiar voice “Can I really do this?!”

I just wanted you to know you are not alone, and if you feel you need support and community then The Wedding Biz Club may be right for you. This is not an ikky sales thing, this is a hand reaching out if you want to grab it. You can read more here >>>

And…just to say…

Before I get lots of worried messages from my clients (I can see you – opening up Facebook Messenger whilst reading this!) I am back now to full form, 100% Emma and it is because of YOU that I am. You remind me every day what it is all about, and seeing your amazing progress makes my heart smile wider than you can ever know.

5 Tips to get your motivation back

How to stay motivated when you just can’t be bothered

11 JULY 2017 // YOU & BIZ SH*T

We all have those days. You know the ones I mean. When you have a massive to do list, the house is messy, the washing needs to be done, the blog needs to be written, the cat needs feeding and you just can’t be bothered *OK, you feed the cat, but that is it!*

So, first off. You are Normal.

Second. How can you motivate yourself when you do feel like this? Because sometimes these days can drag on, and on and on and you need to nip it in the bud!

5 Ways to motivate yourself in your business

01. Put on some music. Really REALLY loud and have a dance. Now, before you roll your eyes are me – try it! I used to hate tips like this but, honestly, it works. This is my #1 mood lifter.

02. Make a list. OK, not the most exciting thing in the world UNLESS you make it so! Use your favourite pen, your prettiest notebook and make a list. It might me writing down your to do list (which may be the reason you are in this slump so getting it out of your head is a good thing) or you could write a list of books you want to read, places you want to visit, things you want to buy. Making lists like this can really motivate you.

03. Connect with others who get it! Being self-employed is lonely! There, I said it! It can be really really hard when you are on your own, doing your own thing, in charge of your own time. Because of this you have no one to pull you out of a slump, no one to go have a whinge with next to the water machine! No one to have a silly giggle with. You need business buddies around you. You need to have them for your own sanity! Because people who are not self-employed do not get it. I have a couple of groups of business buddies and oh my, they save me. The know what I am going through when I am trying to do something (because I am on the same journey as you you know – growing a business and trying to figure it all out!). A quick message on Facebook and I am back in the game! So, reach out to people who get it, even better if they are in the wedding industry (because it is a totes different industry to everything else!). Community and connection are two of the core values I have inside The Wedding Biz Club – a place where like-minded people in this same industry get together and grow. Enrolment to the Club is closed at the moment but re-opening really soon so make sure you are on the list if you feel you need some support and education in your wedding biz life! You can get on the list here.

04. Go for a walk. Round the park, to the local coffee shop (or pub!). Wherever – just get a change of scenery. This is an instant mood lifter and this is often what I do when I have a crazy busy day and need to refocus.

05. Do something fun for you! This will be different for everyone. Your fun may be reading a book, a magazine, listening to a podcast, searching for funny cat videos on YouTube (guilty!), or watching an episode of your latest Netflix obsession. Make some bread, a cake or do make something yummy. Have a medicine bag of tricks that you can pull out when you need a lift.  Mine? I tend to do a little yoga session, go and read my book or even sometimes be really luxurious and go and have a bath in the middle of the day! Anything to hit that reset button.

Bonus tip = Don’t wallow is busy and unproductivity! There is NO POINT having a pity party on your own. DON’T sit in front of your laptop getting wound up because you are not doing anything. If you find yourself being unfocussed then step away. You will get your mojo back much quicker this way – trust me. I have wasted hours doing this, and now, as soon as I notice that I am getting really easily distracted I do one of the things above and I change my mindset, often ending up being more productive than before.

So next time you are in a CBA (can’t be arsed!) mood, try one of these. IF you STILL feel the same, then just go with it. Have a break. Allow yourself the afternoon off and start a fresh the following day. If you do this though make sure you do it with no guilt and with no self-judgement. Allow yourself the time.

With love

Emma

Set yourself up for the next few months with a North Star Session

North Star Session – A business ritual

6 JUNE 2017 // BIZ SH*T

Today I want to talk to you about a ritual I have introduced into my business over the past few years that has helped me grow, that has helped me move forward and that has helped me shape the way I want to grow my business. Now I know my business model is different to yours however, the principal I am going to share with you here works for every single business.

This ritual? My North Star Sessions.

If you follow me over on Instagram then you may have seen my Instagram Story from last week where I took myself away from the office (aka the spare room!) and went to a beautiful venue a few miles down the road. I cosied myself into the snug with a pot of tea and I started my North Star Session.

Let me explain.

I like to think of my big scary business goal as my North Star. The thing that sits high up the sky, that lights my way, that I can look up to to get direction. At the start of the year I set myself one BIG goal. For me, this goal was a 5 year goal. It is the first long term goal I have ever set myself because before I didn’t feel like I knew enough about me or about my business to set a long term goal. Previous years I have set 6 month goals, 12 month goals, goals that have just moved me forward and this may be the case for you now.

From this goal I set myself projects that I needed to do to get me closer to that goal, with some key milestones along the way. This North Star Session is my review time. It is time that I take myself out of the everyday noise of life and actually make sure that I am still on the right path. Make sure that I am flexing where I need to. Make sure that I am spending time doing the right things – the things that will get me closer to that 5 year goal.

This point of the year is a fantastic time to review and reflect. To see progress. To see what is holding you back. To see what is working and what is not. And that is the ritual I am talking about here today.

So what are the steps of a North Star Session if you want your own?

Step 01. Step away

Take yourself out or at least away from distraction. I know this is not always possible if you have kiddies or commitments but try and sneak to a coffee shop for an hour or two, or at least work from the sofa instead of the desk – the important thing is to change the scenery and remove distractions.

Step 02. Brew up!

Get coffee! Or your favourite beverage. I quite like doing this over a glass of wine but I was driving so you know – tea was the choice!

Step 03. Look back

Look back at the notes, the goals, the plans you made at the start of the year.

Now, you will be in one of two places here

    1. You may have planned and planned and planned and then not looked at the again – that’s OK, that is why we are doing this, to get you back refocused
    2. You may not have planned and may not have anything to look at – don’t get your knickers in a twist – just think about what you had thought that you would have liked to achieved 6 months into the year if you were looking back to Jan.

Looking back at the plans helps you to see just what you have ticked off but the biggest lesson from doing this for me is that I can see what has changed. Have my dreams changed. Has my passion changed. Has my focus changed. Have I shifted. This is super powerful to do because it means you can engage with these feelings and really use them to move you into the next step of your business.

Personally I have one notebook that I have used for my goals and plans for each year and that is what I grabbed off the shelf before I came to do this North Star Session.

Step 04. Journal

Write about the last 6 months.  This may seem a little woo woo and a little odd to start with but I journal. I write about the past 6 months. I don’t overthink it, I just think about what my business has felt like, what I have felt like, what has worked for me, what has not. What has felt good, what has not. What I have done, what I have changed, what I have loved.

This can take a little of time to get into so you have to sometimes nudge it along a little. I take a look through my diary and see what tasks I have done as this tends to jog the memory! For you it could be good to look through the bookings you have had, the blogs you have written, the stuff you have done in your biz and the brides you have worked with. This can help get you thinking.

Just journal for as long as you want about whatever you want over the last 6 months. This helps you to release any frustrations but it also helps you to bring to the surface what you HAVE achieved which is probably more than you even think. This is so lovely to look back on aswell. In 6 months time, in 12 months time, in 5 years time.

If you are going to commit to doing this North Star Session then don’t miss this step – even if it feels a little strange for you. It is really powerful for the next step.

Step 05. Look forward

Look forward to the next 6 months. What do you want to achieve and what projects do you need to do to get you there?

When it comes to planning we can get a little over complicated. Thinking that there is a system we need to use, a structure, a format, an answer. But you know what, there really isn’t. Everyone works differently and I have honestly found that the best plans are the simple ones. Just brainstorming where you want to be in 6 months time – what do you want to get to the end of the year and say you have achieved? How do you want to feel in your business? What do you want your business to give you?

Step 06. Brainstorm

The next step is to brainstorm the actions that you need to take. Again, no need to overthink this. No need to get into overwhelm. Just take the actions above and then write down all the steps that you need to do to get you moving. This list will evolve and get clearer as you dive in.

Step 07. Open the diary and plot it out

The key thing to getting this working is to open the diary and actually book time out. I did this as part of my North Star Session and it makes me feel super clear on what action I need to take. Getting it in the diary sets the tone for action. Write it in PEN so you have to stick to it 🙂

TOP TIP – If you find it hard to find time to do this biz building stuff then I recommend blocking out an afternoon each week that you dedicate just to this work. You can flex this at busy times, such as now, you may be bang slap in the middle of crazy wedding season but just make time for this stuff because it will grow you. Even if that time is in a month or two – set it out now and get into the focus.

ACTION

So go off and book a North Star Session in with yourself. You can do this in a couple of hours if you set your mind to it. Remove distractions and get to it. Own it. Make this your time.

Get your North Star front and centre to your vision.

May Goals

May Goals.

1 MAY 2017 // INSPIRATION

In my mission to share more of the behind the scenes of me in my biz, I want you to see the importance of setting goals in your biz. When you have them on a piece of paper that you can look at everyday, you are reminded of what you are working towards. This is oh so powerful and I want you to see that in your biz. These goals go above and beyond your “usual” or the work that you already have booked in with clients. These are actions that are going to get you closer to your North Star – your big scary dream – your achievable big scary dream.

This is a game changer, seriously. Especially as we are drawing closer to the half year mark.

So, here are my goals for May

01. Run Brand Story event for clients – I am so blumin passionate about helping my clients understand how they can truly stand out in the market and how they can get their brides to choose THEM over mrs competitor down the road. Because there is a better way of doing business and it is about standing out and being true to your own message. The event is going to focus on this + we are going to be looking at how they can package their services so that they sell in the minds of their soul brides. The event is on the 4 May and I am super excited for the beautiful group of ladies who are coming.

02. Create Space in my life – This has been a constant theme for me for 2017. One of my words for 2017 was SIMPLICITY and I am looking at how I can make everything easier, simpler, more efficient and how I can create more space in my world. Not just in my work but in my life aswell. So this month we are having a big clear out at home to create more space. Space to be creative, to be focused, to feel freedom. This means tackling the wardrobe & the kitchen cupboards…if I don’t make it – it has been nice knowing you!

03. Resource library – I have wanted to set up a resource library for you lovely lot for a while. A place where you can sign up once and get access to tons of free stuff which will be added to each month. Sounds good right! I am excited about this so watch this space. You can take a look at the freebies I have at the moment here – some may be changing so nab them whilst you can >>>

04. Create the first Wedding Biz Coach book come strategy guide come planner – This has been a dream of mine – to make a planner that is specifically focussed to those in the wedding industry (you!) and this month I am going to make the first edition! So EXCITED about this I could scream. This is going to be a luxury notebook/planner/motivation/pep talk kinda guide that will be a joy to work with. Again…keep an eye on my social media and my newsletters for more on this!

05. Birthday celebrations! Oh yes, it is also my birthday month so I will make sure there is some time for me as part of my self-care and appreciation. I don’t really get too depressed with birthdays, I like to see them as another wonderful year on this amazing planet. We are truly lucky and I feel this gratitude more and more the older I get. HOWEVER I do have a lot of grey hair…which I am just classing as really really really really blonde. I am in denial with that.

So that’s it for May. I have lots of exciting client projects I am working on at the moment including two very exciting brand and website design projects. I am loving the brands we are creating and cannot wait to share more on that.

YOUR ACTION

Set yourself some goals. Regardless of whether you read this blog post at the end of a month, middle of the month or at 3am in the morning (yep – I do that A LOT!). Make Goals. Take Action. Achieve Dreams.

Till next week…have a great one

Your Wedding Business Needs Your Voice.

Your Wedding Business Needs Your Voice.

27 MARCH 2017 // YOU & PEP TALK

Your business needs to have you entwined in it. Your voice. You. ✋  No one else.

What do I mean by voice?

I mean the way you write, the way you come across, the way you represent your brand. You see most brides and grooms will find you online, on your social media, on your website so they won’t see or hear your actual physical voice BUT they will read it. The words you use, the way you say them, the personality you inject into your words will paint a picture of you and this is what I mean by your voice.

So you know you when you land on a website and you read the pages and they just feel like they are talking to you? It is because the person writing that copy, those words, have added their own voice to what they have written. They haven’t copied, or worked of a template, they have written as they would talk and this helps brides to connect to YOU. And this connection is really important.

So think of ways that you can add your voice into your words with a simple trick – read your words out loud and see if they sound like you, if they don’t, then have a play and make them sound like you because this will help you attract the right brides t o you.

11 Ways to Immerse Yourself in Your Goal.

11 Ways to Immerse Yourself in Your Goal.

14 MARCH 2017 // BIZ SH*T

I was speaking with one of my business buddies the other day (do you have one – if not you need one!) and we were sharing ideas of things we do to make our goals actually happen.  We both a have the plan, we both have the to do list(s!), we both have the intention, passion and determination. But what else can we do to make sure we achieve? This was the topic of our discussion.

And we came up with a big long list of things that just flowed out of discussion. Things we have done ourselves, things we have picked up along the way, things we have heard other people do and I wanted to share this list with you, in case it helps you.

So, here goes – you ready?

01. Change your passwords to your goal. We are entering passwords into things numerous times a day and we do it without even thinking about it. How great would it be if that password was actually something that we were working towards – perhaps it is a financial goal, perhaps it is a project we are working on, perhaps it is the big scary dream that gets us out of bed in the morning. If we could get this running subconsciously through our brains, what impact would it have? A lot I think!  So, the passcode on your phone could be a financial target perhaps. The password on your computer could link to a big project you are working on. The key – Just use one (because you will forget them if you have more and it will dilute the effect of what we are trying to do here).

02. Make a screensaver for your laptop and your mobile of your goal – you can do this on Canva. So you see it every time you are working, every time you pick up your phone. A constant reminder of your purpose, of your goal.

0.3 Write your goal down every single day. This is a simple trick but something I do when I am working to a target. At the top of my diary everyday I write down my goal so that I am reminding myself of it every single day. The act of physically writing has a power over your brain – it embeds the message and this is so key for your goals.

04. Create a mantra for yourself about your goal. Mantras are really powerful, especially if you do meditation or spend a few minutes doing some breathing exercises. Your mantra could be something to do with your goal or it could be something you need to be in order to get to your goal. For example, you can say, throughout they day “Today I will be focussed and productive and take steps closer to achieving my goal”. I try to do a yoga practice at the start of each day and at the end of the practice I set an intention for my day and this will change dependent upon what it is that I need to focus on. If I have client work to do I will say something like “I will dedicate my energy to [x] and connect to their goals and purpose to enable me to provide my best work”.

05. Make a goal video. This is a fun thing to do. Let’s say you have some positive messages that you want to embed in your brain about success, create yourself a little video of those messages. Make some memes in Canva and stitch them together in a system such as magisto and make them into a little video for yourself to watch when you need a kick up the bum!

06. Create a vision board.  I love vision boards but I haven’t always loved them. I kind of thought they were a bit of a woo woo thing to be honest, but now I love them! They are a great way of immersing yourself in your goal because they remind you what you are striving for in a really visual way. Now, one of the biggest barriers I hear about vision boards is having your goals, targets, financial details plastered all around your office (which well could be your dining room!) so, a way that I do my vision boards is on the back of a picture that I have in my office so I can turn it around when I don’t want people to see it. You could always use a big board and have it down the side of your workspace and get it out when you need to be inspired. It really does work wonders and I really recommend that you give it a go.

07. Create a Pinterest vision board. If you are more of an online kinda girl and less of a cut things out and stick them down kinda girl then why not create a vision board in Pinterest. Just create a new board and, now this is important, make sure you set it as SECRET this way no one will be able to see it. You could pin places you want to visit, magazines you want to be featured in, things you want to do, brands you aspire to – anything that motivates you and gets you going.

08. Set a daily reminder. I love this one and I do it every time I am focussing on the outcome of a project. I create a new reminder on my phone to go off throughout the day, first thing in the morning, mid morning, mid afternoon and then on the evening before I go to bed and in that reminder I write my goal. So what happens is the reminder pops up and it realigns me back to my intention for the day, for that week, for that month – however long the project is running for. It is a great way of bringing your awareness back to what you are GOING to achieve.

09. Make a poster for your wall. Go into canva and create a new design, A4 or A5 and get creative – write your goal in the centre – print it out and stick it on your wall in front of where you work, or in a frame on your desk. Again, seeing this everyday will just remind you of what you are aiming for. If I have something big going on I will also stick them inside my wardrobe, inside my kitchen cupboards so that they keep popping up throughout the day to just get me back focussed.

10. Visualise what it would feel like to achieve your goal. Spend a few minutes everyday just closing your eyes and play out the scene of you achieving your goal. It could be different things, like going to the cashpoint and seeing a figure on the screen. It could be visualising opening your emails and there being unread emails in there with the subject line “enquiry”. It may be visualising lying on a beach on holiday or sightseeing around New York if that is part of your dream. Do this throughout the day, picking different situations that you can see playing out in front of you to do with your goal. When you are brushing your teeth, doing the washing up, putting your make up on (probably keep your eyes open for that one!).

11. Journal! Write down your goal and start to journal the process that you are taking to get there. Journalling is great for all sorts of reasons and I have to be honest here and say that I am relatively new to it all. I am not very consistent and I know that I want to be because when I do do it consistently, I always feel so much more aligned to my goals and this helps me achieve. Journalling is basically sitting down each day and writing. You can literally write about anything you want, but the ultimate is when you write about what you want to achieve because thoughts become things and when you write these thoughts down, you are cementing them in time and this helps to make them happen.

So there you have it, 11 ways you can truly Immerse yourself in your goals. Now, you probably won’t do all of them at the same time – I swap and change depending upon what I feel like I need – but now you have a little toolkit you can come back to when you need to get some focus.

I would love to hear what you do to get centred on your goals, and if you have any suggestions let me know and I will add them to the list! This is all so very personal and each of us will react differently to these tools but the great thing is that you are willing to give them a try and see what works best for you. And how do I know you are willing? Because you are still reading this and you didn’t give up at point 3.

Go get goal immersed!

3 Reasons why Less is More when it comes to growing your wedding business

Less is More.

27 FEBRUARY 2017 // YOUR PRODUCTS & SERVICES & BIZ SH*T

This little phrase has so many meanings and so many which are relevant to you in your wedding business. The concept that less is more can totally freak people out, especially when they are first starting out in business. Wherever you are in your business journey – you may be just starting out or you may have been in business for a while and have learnt the true meaning of this phrase, today I want to share a couple of things where I feel this will make a massive difference to your business growth.

01. Your products and services

Brides get totally confused by too much choice. They may love love love what you do (which is why they are looking) but they are just too consumed with the options that they have. So they panic. They close down the window of your home on the internet (your website). And they move on in their life. It is like when you go to a restaurant that has 30 different choices. You panic a little about what to order because you are torn between 2 or 3 dishes and you know that if you order 1 of them and then your friend has the other, you will wish you had ordered that one! Too much choice leads to confusion so here less is more.

This is also true for the time you can take to promote your products and services. For brides to even know they exist you need to promote them and if you have too many, you cannot give attention to them. You are almost diluting the specialism of what you offer. Now this may not be as relevant for some wedding services, but just be mindful that the more you have, the more you need to spend time promoting each individual one. You may find that you get better results when you really focus on a couple of things rather than a whole load of things. This is where less is more.

02. Your branding

Working with wedding business owners on their branding there is normally a common problem that they all have. Their brand is too complicated. If you look at top brands such as apple, such as Starbucks – if you look at luxe magazines such as Elle, Harper, Marie Claire – their brand is so simple. Less is absolutely more when it comes to your brand, especially if you are targeting a high end bride. Keep it simple – for your brides to recognise and for you to work on. By adding lots of different fonts and colours and elements you are a) diluting your brand and b) you are making life harder for yourself. Less is absolutely more when it comes to brand.

03. Your marketing focus

OK, sorry to use the “M” word because we all know that that is a real off-putter BUT what I am talking about here is where you are focusing your efforts when it comes to telling your brides about what you offer. You are better to focus on one social media channel and do it really really well rather than spreading yourself between 4 and doing them all a bit crap. I know successful wedding businesses who have grown their whole business based on Instagram. Once they have mastered that, they move on to others. But focus on one or two at a time and do them really well. Don’t dilute your marketing efforts – focus on them and you will get traction.

So what is right?

If someone asked me what the perfect must haves are for any marketing strategy I would say:

  1. Blog once a week
  2. Create a freebie that you can promote in those blogs to get email addresses
  3. Send one newsletter at least once a month (ideally every 2 weeks)
  4. Post on the one or two chosen social media everyday
  5. Engage with people who respond

Less is more. Start small and grow. That is how you grow a successful wedding business Click To TweetEveryone started at the same place as you so the people who you are looking up to now where once where you are looking up to someone else. Don’t be overwhelmed by the path, just take one step at a time and you will get further down it with confidence, with grace.

How your perfectionism could be stopping brides from booking you

How Your Perfectionism Could be Stopping Brides from Booking You.

17 FEBRUARY 2017 // YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES // YOUR BRIDES

This is a hard topic for me because it kind of feels like I am talking to myself. Because everything I am about to say I am going to do wincing with pain because this is a hard lesson I had to learn in my own business (and I still have to remind myself every now and then!).

And it is that phrase “Sometimes good is good enough” Click To Tweet

I give 110% to everything I do, in biz and in my life, and sometimes that can hold me back. It can stop me from moving forward. The reason? Because I don’t put things out there that should be out there until they are perfect. But you know what, things will never ever ever be perfect because one person’s idea of perfect is different to someone else’s.

I bet you a coffee (a virtual one mind!) that you are sitting on something in your business. You are holding back on something because it is “not quite there”. It is not perfect. It is good, but not perfect. It may be a new product or service offering, it may be a new design, it may be a thing you have been thinking about for ages but have not yet taken action.  The thing is, until you test the waters you do not really know whether something is going to be right for your brides. And if you do not put that thing out there, then brides will not know it exists and therefore they will not want it!

So, do you owe me a coffee?

This perfectionism is stopping your business from growing. Because if your products, services, awesome wedding offerings are sitting in your brain, in your notebook, or in draft pages on your website, then your brides cannot book them.

I know, I know, I know. I have been you now. Freaking out thinking “But it has to be right” and yes, it has to be good BUT sometimes good really is good enough. You can always tweak, tinker and titivate – and let’s be honest you will do that anyway, it is just part of your business evolving.

Let me give you a real life example of a website. I am currently working on the rebrand of The Wedding Biz Club as one of my February goals and I have been faffing around the new spangly website. I keep changing silly piddly things, things that in the grand scheme of things will not make a difference and this strive for perfection is slowing me down. So, I pulled my CEO pants up, gave myself a telling off and made a decision so I could move forward. I told myself that I can always change the colour of the button (see, I told you it was something silly!) later if I felt the need but now, my priority was to get the blumin thing finished so I can start to get it out there.

You may have been the same with this thing that you have been faffing with, the thing that you have been sitting on and the thing that is not out there for your brides to buy yet.

Your brides need to see stuff to desire it! So you need to tell them about it and to do this you need to get it done.

YOUR ACTION >>>

  • Look at the thing you are not promoting yet and ask yourself why. What is stopping you?
  • If it is because you don’t know the next step to take then you need to have a brainstorm and get down all the steps you need to take (if you need help with this – my Get It Done programme would be right up your street as there is a full module all about planning out a project and making it happn – read more here >>> )
  • If it is because of time, you need to set some time aside to just get it done and get it out there – open up the diary now and block out a couple of hours to just get it done.
  • Look at what can be done that will be good enough and share it – I dare you to do it today.

Until you start to get that thing out there you will not know whether brides will love it and you will not get bookings until they know it exists!

So, stop faffing, stop procrastinating and start doing. That is the only way you will grow.

Move your perfectionism level down a notch from 10 to 8 and you will feel more relaxed, Trust me. Click To Tweet

How Wedding Fairs can Grow Your Wedding Business

VALENTINES BIZ GROWTH SERIES

GET YOUR BIZ READY FOR NEWLY ENGAGED BRIDES

How Wedding Fairs can Grow Your Wedding Business.

13 FEBRUARY 2017 // YOU, YOUR PRODUCTS

Welcome to day 4 of the Valentines Wedding Biz Growth Series. So, we are looking at ways that you can get in front of those newly engaged Valentine brides. They have opened the Pinterest account, searched on social media and online shops now what do they do?

WEDDING FAIRS

After the EEEEK of engagement has subsided a little (and the bride has got used to the new rock on her finger), the next thing they do is google “local wedding fairs”.

Now, I know that wedding fairs get a bad rep. Sometimes they are brilliant, sometimes they are naff. However, if you do them right, they really can fill your order book and I say this from a place of knowing as this is how I grew my wedding stationery business when I first started. I went to wedding fairs, I got email addresses from brides and I followed up with newsletters. And I still get enquiries to this day so I know it works!

Wedding fairs are a great place to connect with newly engaged brides because that is when they go – when they are in the mooching phase (or the tarting phase as I like to call it! Read more about that here >>>).

Free Wedding Fair Guide

So what is the bride wedding fair cycle?

01. Brides go to wedding fairs when they first get engaged (and this is when they are free and easy with their email address, signing up to anything and everything to do with weddings and this is where you can get them to sign up for you so you can keep in touch with them with wonderful newsletters)

02. After they have been to wedding fais for the past 10 sundays they get bored and stop going.

03. They may go to a few more closer to the wedding date if they still have some services to book BUT if you do not capture brides at the beginning of their wedding planning journey you are less likely to convert them to booked brides

Wedding fairs only drive sales if you follow up! It’s that simple. And by follow up I don’t mean one sales email sent. I mean sending emails consistently that add value and that build the know, like and trust factor with brides and grooms.

 free-email-scripts-3

STOP for a second though ...

Before you go off and book onto tons of wedding fairs, there are lots of things to consider before investing in a wedding fair and that is a subject for another day, however here are just 5 reasons WHY wedding fairs are great for growing your wedding business

01. They are a real way for brides to see touch and experience the quality of your service

02. You can start to connect with brides by being friendly and helpful and just your most wonderful self! Brides will fall in love.

03. Brides will be happy to give you their email address if you offer them something wonderful to sign up for (this is your freebie – a little pressie you give your brides like a printable checklist)

04. You get REAL access to REAL brides which means you can see what they want! You can see how they react to what you have to offer and this can help you make really informed decisions about your products and service

05. You get to mingle and speak with other suppliers which is great for your sanity (!) and also for possible collaborations in the future.

YOUR ACTION

01. Have a Boss think about whether wedding fairs could work for you IF you follow the points in the free guide (Download here >>>)

02. Do some research for you some wedding fairs that could be perfect for attracting your ideal bride

03. Plan it in as a strategic project – a move that will help you grow, not just a “I’ll give it a go!” kinda thing. Make the most of it!

The key thing with wedding fairs is follow up! Come back on Wednesday for the next blog in the Valentines Series and you may read more about that!

In the meantime, download my free wedding fair guide which you can get instant access to. I also will send you a bonus sales ninja training video class which I know people find really valuable. Download here >>>

9 FEBRAURY 2017 // BIZ SH*T

Welcome back to Tip #2 in the Valentines Biz Growth Series! In blog post #1 (read it here) we talked about Pinterest and how that can be a great place for brides to find out about you. Today I wanted to talk about other social media channels that can be good for you in addition to Pinterest.

Social media is the ultimate free business tool and we are so very lucky to have this at our fingertips – literally!

I know that it can feel like you are “doing” social media all of the time and it can feel like you are talking to no-one but you never know who is listening!

If your social media feels like a full time job at the moment, you need to think of a different way of doing it. Personally I schedule my posts in at the start of everyday as part of my morning business housework and then have set times during the day when I jump in an interact with anyone who has commented. This works really well for me so perhaps give that a go. The other way is to spend an hour every week writing and scheduling your social media in one go so all you need to do throughout the rest of the week is engage and interact with any comments.

A little word of wisdom when it comes to social media – it is better to focus on one or two social media channels and do them really well rather that spewing over all of them and doing them half arsed

Key components of a successful social media strategy:

  • Post consistently, at least once a day (for more guidance on this click here)
  • Post good quality content (which basically means content that your brides are going to love)
  • Don’t just sell, sell, sell – show your brides you know your stuff by commenting and sharing ideas, trends, thoughts, wedding wisdom
  • BUT…don’t be afraid to sell – you need to tell your brides that they can buy from you!
  • Use a mixture of text posts, memes, photos and – shock horror – video if you are brave! (Read how to do memes (those pretty little picture things you see!) here and how to do FB Live here)
  • Engage with people who comment – not only is this great for connecting, it also helps the social media platform like you – it’s all about the algorithm *which is basically a little piece of magic that no one really knows how it works!*
  • Know your purpose – the millennial bride uses social media to plan her wedding so stay focussed on this when all feels hopeless!

In addition to Pinterest (read yesterdays blog) my two favourite social media for wedding businesses are Facebook and Instagram.

Let’s talk Facebook for a moment:

Facebook still remains a fantastic place to hang out for any wedding business.  It will not only help get you found (if you post consistently), it will help brides to get to know you more. Let’s say this newly engaged bride has asked her recently married friends for recommendations – they are likely to say “Oh yes, [insert your biz name] was brilliant! Here is her Facebook page!”. They will scroll down your feed and know immediately whether you are the right person for them. So, if Facebook is your tool of choice, then post consistently and post stuff that these newly engaged brides will love!

Let’s talk Instagram for a moment:

Instagram is also a great place to get found as brides are using it more and more as a search tool. There is one big difference with Instagram – you need to have really good pictures to use on this platform because it is a highly visual tool. Instagram is a great way of telling the story of your business, personally I love it but I am a very visual person. Hashtags are key to getting you discovered on Instagram so make sure you use them – don’t be shy! The other key thing with Instagram is again, posting consistently, once a day. Word of warning…don’t batch post in Instagram because it works like a newsfeed so people will just unfollow you if there are suddenly 10 posts from you in one go and then nothing for a week.

Which one to focus on?!

If you are confused on which social media to focus on, check out the visibility tool here where you can choose the best one for you.
Mindset__5_

Your action!

Look at which social media channel is best for you – where are these newly engaged brides going to be looking for their suppliers? Use the visibility toolkit for this:

Pre-schedule in some posts now for Valentines Day to make the most of this proposal season! Perhaps make a “Who’s getting married? ME!” meme that brides will share! (Watch this tutorial on Canva if you are not sure how to do this!)

See you on Saturday where I will talk about another way you can get visible with those newly engaged brides!

GET YOUR BIZ READY FOR NEWLY ENGAGED BRIDES

Using Pinterest to Get In Front of Newly Engaged Brides.
7 FEBRUARY 2017 // YOUR BRIDES & GROWTH

February is the month of love and this means lots of newly engaged couples!

“Will you marry me!” is the little question that will popped by lots of loved up souls on Valentine’s Day. What does this mean for you?  It means that there are lots of lovely new brides and grooms out there who are starting their wedding planning journey.

Lots of lovely new brides and grooms who are getting excited, nervous, overwhelmed and excited again, all in one go!!  This means that there are lots of new couples that NEED what you have to offer, even if they don’t know it yet!

So, what can you practically do today to help you turn up in those searches?

Over the next few blogs I am going to run a mini series about some of the things you can do to make the most of this loved up season!

Starting with one of my favourites…

Pinterest.

OK, let’s think of the process of a newly engaged bride

  1. Say yes
  2. Tell the world
  3. Open a Pinterest account!

So what is Pinterest? I know most of you will know because you have probably lost hours, days, even weekends pinning all those DIY projects and bits and bobs!  The easiest way to describe is that it is like a digital noticeboard full of ideas and inspiration. The key thing for you is that brides plan their wedding with the help of Pinterest and that means it is a fantastic was way of getting your products and services in front of brides and grooms, to inspire them and so they go over to your website!

It is not just about posting and pinning pretty pictures – it is about writing blog content that you can post, it is about adding your prodycts so that they click through and land on your website and then that is how you can wow them and engage with them.

Brides and Grooms are building their dream wedding through Pinterest. Brides spend more time on Pinterest than any other platform (we are probably all guilty of this!) and it is growing more and more.  Pinterest is a given now in planning a wedding and you are missing a trick if you are not on there.

So your action…get active on Pinterest!

If you are not on Pinterest:

Set up a business account, set up some boards, start pinning your products and services, making sure you link to your website. Keep adding to your boards. Pin complementary products/services to your boards.  Want to learn more about Pinterest? I have a free course all about Pinterest that walks you through the basics + tons more! You can get instant access here, all you need to do is pop your email address in the box below and you will get instant access

If you are currently on Pinterest here are some tips to get better:

  • Get better at pinning. As a minimum, you should be pinning 5-10 items a day and if you want to really use Pinterest as a traffic driver you should aim to pin 20-25 items a day. You can use a tool such as Board Booster for this – worth checking out and you can re-pin old content to.
  • Make sure you use descriptive words in the description that brides are searching for!
  • Make sure you link back to your website
  • Post blogs on there, service pages, products, memes, pretty things!
  • Use google analytics on your website to see what traffic you are getting
  • Use Pinterest as social media – follow others and grow your followers!
  • Promote your boards and pins through other social media channels to drive traffic

My free programme talks you through all of this if you want to know more, just pop your deets below and you will get instant access.

If you feel that Pinterest is not right for you, I would love to hear why to see if we can think of a way that it could because, honestly, brides are using it to plan their entire wedding so it is a great place for you to be.

The key is pinning your own content and leading it to your website.

Make sure you come back to the blog on Thursday for Valentines Biz Growth Tip #2.

How I Set my Goals, Targets and Tasks each month – my checklist

How I Set my Goals, Targets and Tasks each month – my checklist. #Behindthescenes

3 FEBRUARY 2017 // BIZ SH*T

Everyone goes goal setting crazy in January, but February comes and that process seems to stops, so I thought today I would share with you how I actually plan in my business for my month ahead. Real life, behind the scenes stuff. So, grab a cuppa, and have a read to see if this will help you to set your goals for this month and all the months!

Setting goals will help you to get those brides booked and will grow your business Click To Tweet

To make it super easy I am going to breakdown the process I follow, step by step

almost like a checklist.

01. First off, I block out some time in the diary at the start of each month to plan for the month, sometimes this only needs half an hour, sometimes a little longer.

02. I sit down and look at my goal for the year which is sitting on notice board in my office, big and bold so I can see it everyday.

03. With this goal in mind, I ask myself “What can I do this month to get me closer to my goal” and see what naturally flows into my mind.

04. I then get practical. I have a nice long list of projects that I brainstormed at the start of the year along with my rough plan for the coming 3 months (I work in 3 month blocks) all sitting in my Trello account (the hub for my business) – pst if you wanna know how to do this I share it ALL in my Get It Done course Here >>> .

05. I look at the projects I have earmarked for the month ahead. I then sit back and ask myself if they still feel like the right things to focus on. I normally intuitively know if they are, or if I need to swap things around a bit. Once I have done this, I know that I am on the right track and I can start my month with the focus I know that I need to move forward.

Sometimes this process takes me a few minutes, sometimes it takes me a little longer, it depends on what mood I am in, or whether anything has changed in my business.

06. The next thing I do is grab my paper diary, open up my Trello board and my google calendar. I work through both to see what I have already got committed in the diary, business and personal things that need my attention. This allows me to see how much time I realistically have to work on the projects in my business.

07. I make a list of all of the MUST DO’s that need to happen this month. Things like client work, recording content for my programmes, setting out my blogs, newsletters, social media etc – what I like to call the housework of my business (the stuff that needs to be done everyday to keep things ticking over).

08. Against this list I estimate how long each task is going to take, roughly, a few hours, a day, a couple of days and I plot it out in the dairy. This then gives me a realistic view as to how much time and when I can work on the projects in my business for the month ahead (acknowledging that Feb is a short month too!).

This bit of my process normally takes about half an hour, depending on how much stuff there is to do (at this point I am just getting clear on the tasks not the how to!). Sometimes I do this straight into Trello which is the system I use to manage my world *literally!* or I make a hard copy list and transfer it across, it just depends what kind of mood I am in!

09. Next I take the projects I have set myself and I fill the gaps! I know the hours I work in my biz so I plot my projects out in those gaps and I have a clear, realistic view of my month ahead.

As I work through the month, I can flex things, I can move things but for me, starting the month with a clear idea of what I am doing helps keep me focussed and keeps my on track with my goal and I know that this is the only way that I can achieve my dreams.

10. The final phase in my month planning is to set my intentions and I do this is three ways. First I set my goals, then and set 3 targets to focus on (which are usually in line with my goals) and third (this is a new thing for 2017) I set myself some affirmations for the month ahead. So let me tell you about each of these things.

11. My goals are normally focussed on biz with a few personal ones thrown in. Now, before you run off into a dark room, I challenge myself in a big way each month and I set quite a few goals that I know will push me. For me, personally, my goals are always in addition to the “work” I need to do, client work etc, they are goals that will grow my business. The number of goals flex throughout the year based on a) what I already have committed to and b) how big the projects are.

I set myself three targets every single month and I write them down every single day to reinforce them in my mind. Targets are anything that you can measure – numbers. A few examples:

  • Increase number of followers on Facebook/Instagram/Pinterest/Twitter to [x]Write [x] blogs
  • Pin [x] of my pins on Pinterest everyday
  • Bring in £[x] Income
  • Attract [x] new clients [Brides]
  • Grow my mailing list by [x]
  • Write [x] newsletters
  • Add [x] new images to my website

You get the picture – anything that you can physically track and know whether you have accomplished it.  Targets are so important to your growth, without them, you have nothing to aim for. You have nothing to push yourself for. Let’s say one of your targets is to get 5 bookings this month and you are nearing the end of the month. If you have that target in front of you, you will intentionally think “What can I do today to meet that target” and then you will take more informed action to convert and enquiry or send an email with an offer, or do something that will get that booking.  My business didn’t start to grow before I had targets, targets have literally pushed me more and more each month and that is powerful stuff.

12. So, I set three targets for the month ahead and I immerse myself in those targets. I write them down in my notebook every morning and ask myself “What can I do today to get closer to that”. So let’s say, one of my targets is to grow my mailing list, I would make sure I add a link to my freebie on my social media channels to drive new sign ups, I would pop links in my blogs to drive new sign ups, I would take intentional action to get closer to achieving that target. I go through all of this in Get (Sh)it Done course which you can get instant access to now >>>

13. The final thing that I do is I set my self some affirmations for the month ahead, in line with the goals, projects and targets I have set. Now, yes, I know, if you are reading this and you are not a “woo woo” affirmations kinda gal, I was you not that long ago. But then I discovered the power of the mind over what we do and now I admit it – I am full on WOO WOO. This is a new activity I have added to my monthly planning so this is only the second month I have done it (and January’s was a bit of a lame effort if I am being honest…as most new things are when you first start them).

An affirmation is basically a positive statement that you repeat to yourself to build belief in the thing you are trying to affirm to yourself. So I set myself about 5 affirmations that link with my goals, that support what my focus is that month. I am hoping that this will help me achieve even more from my targets and my goals because I will empowered and focussed to do so. I will let you know how this goes and will share my woo woo journey with you!

14. The next step is to…you guessed it…

take action!

The bossy bit from me to you (in case you need a good talking to..)

Now you reading this may think “Oh heck that is a lot” but spending just one-two hours at the start of every month if OH SO WORTH IT if you then can have a clear plan for your month ahead. If you can then know what you are trying to achieve. And know that when you sit down at your desk, you have a plan that you know will move you forward. This will grow your wedding business and book more brides.

If you are reading this thinking “I do not know what my goals are” then you need to get your shit together in all honesty. And I don’t mean that to be horrible or bossy but you do. The thing is, you and only you can make this business what you want it to be.  You have to pull up those CEO pants and really and truly get down to doing the stuff that will get you where you want to be. If you literally don’t know where to start, then you may find my course “Get (sh)it Done” really useful, it helps you to get into the right mindframe, gets your focussed on your goals & how you can turn those goals into practical actions that get done. No one can do this for you. You have to take ownership and be the boss of your future, and your business.

I hope that this has helped you, if you have any questions at all, please please please do comment below – I want to help you achieve!

With love

Make It Easy For Yourself to Achieve

Make It Easy.

17 JANUARY 2017 // YOU & BIZ SH*T

How are the New Year Resolutions coming along? Today is “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day” which basically means, after two weeks of trying to keep to new year’s resolutions, people give up. The reason? Because the resolutions set are normally too big, overwhelming and all at once.

My theory is to reframe resolutions as promises to yourself and just choose one at a time to focus on. You can read more about this here but today I want to help you to think about how you can make those good new year resolutions stick.  By good ones I mean the ones you can control & the ones that will actually have an impact on your world.

You just gotta make it easy for yourself!

Let me give you three examples from my personal life:

Non Biz Related – Drink more water. I know that I need to drink more water, I know the impact it will have on me & I know the benefits are worth the effort (and yes, I know drinking water isn’t really effort but it is a habit and a habit takes effort to put into place!), So, how can I make it easier? Answer: Buy a nice new glass (because it is just my personality – if it is pretty or fun, I will use it!) and buy a water bottle so I can see how much I have drank. DONE. I have made it super easy for me to do this now and I really cannot have any excuse why not to do it.

Biz Related – Write more consistent blog posts. This is a big goal for me this year, to get consistent with my content (we are all improving you know!) so how can I make this easy for myself? At the start of the week I open my Trello account and I look at my Editorial Calendar. In there I have a board of blog content ideas. I also have a board called “Writing for this week” and all I do is drag over the content ideas that I am going to write about that week. I then dedicate the first 30-60 minutes of my day (depending on what else I have on) to write. I open my word doc, open my Trello account, pull across the title/idea for the blog post I am going to write and then I just write. This makes it easy for me because I don’t waste the first 10 minutes of my 30 or 60 minutes writing time thinking about what I am going to write about – I can just get into it. I make it as easy as possible for me to do. PS, If you don’t know what Trello is, it is the wonderfully wonderful {free} system that I use to manage my entire business and I show you how I use it in my Get It Done Course which you can read about here.

Non Biz Related – Moisturise more. One of my guilty pleasures is beauty products – I have stacks (and I mean stacks!!) of them…so this year I am committing to use what I have before I buy anything new and specifically, I am promising myself that I will moisturise every evening without fail. How can I make this easy? I have a cosmetics bag in the bathroom with all the products I need in one place. So I can grab this bag, use each thing and then when one runs out, I will replace it with something else from my stash. Simple. I am making it really easy for myself.

So the thing is that new year’s resolutions, the ones that will actually make a difference to your world, can be made possible IF you make it easy. Wanna lose weight? Don’t buy crap food. Wanna get fit? Wake up and put your gym gear straight on and your trainers instead of your slippers.  Everyone is different and everyone will work differently but just see how you can make what you are trying to achieve easier so you have no excuses NOT to do it. But you have to really want to do it in the first place. It has to come from a place of passion and heart otherwise however easy it is, you will always find an excuse not to.

You can totally DO this! 2017 is gonna be YOUR year! Just get moving and chose the things that are going to get you there!

With love

The Change, Improve and Do List

The Change, Improve & Do List.

11 JANUARY 2017 // BIZ SH*T

We have this urge to change, improve and do new stuff at the start of the year. We do it all at once. We want to find more balance, be more healthy, eat well, drink more water, do more exercise, change things in our home, our business and ourselves. Even writing this list is exhausting so no wonder people never stick to their resolutions.

I reframe resolutions and call them promises. Promises I am making to myself, promises of things that will make a difference to me, knowing that they will ultimately have an impact on my business because I will feel more connected, happier and more ready to take on what this crazy entrepreneurial journey has in store for me this year!

Change just one thing at a time.

I have a list in my notebook and in my Trello board (which is the online biz tool I use for getting my shit done) of things that I want to improve, change or start doing, either for my business or for myself. Things I want to turn in to a habit.

At the start of the year, as part of my planning ritual, I review this list and scribble things off that no longer matter to me and add new things that do. I then look at this list and prioritise what is most important to me right now, what will have the biggest impact on me and I start making it a habit. I do it every day. I focus on just one thing at a time. Then, every two weeks I introduce something new off the list. And then that becomes a habit. And then I quickly get through this list and the promises that I made myself actually stay true. I actually do them.

You cannot change everything in one go. You have to take it step by step. But you have to keep the momentum going. You have to keep pushing yourself, that is the only way you will truly become successful, whatever that means to you. Momentum means doing the same thing each and everyday – see it as a chain and not wanting to break the chain.

So why not start a list for yourself? List down what you want to introduce into your world. Mine is split between Biz, Home and Me. I choose something new every two weeks and I commit to implementing it.

To make sure it happens, I plan in advance and I set out the next 4 new things I am going to introduce into my world and I add them to my diary.

My next 4?

  • Get up one hour earlier every morning
  • Pin my own content on Pinterest every single day
  • Promise to drink 8 glasses of water everyday
  • Commit to writing in my journal everyday

Now you may read these and think that they are easy. And that they have nothing to do directly with my business growth BUT these are 4 areas that I have had in my mind to do for a long time and I do them half arsed (if I am being totally honest!). Some days I do them, some days I don’t. But the whole point of this process is to get me to focus on making sure it happens every single day.

You see, you don’t need to make massive huge changes in your business or your life for it to have an impact. It can be simple stuff.  It can be stuff that feels silly writing down. But it is often this stuff that has the greatest impact when all layered upon each other.

TAKE ACTION TODAY TO SEE RESULTS TOMORROW:

  • Make a list of promises
  • Focus on changing one thing at a time
  • Introduce something new every 2 weeks
  • You will finally follow through on those resolutions (aka promises!)
  • Comment below and let me know what is the #1 thing you are going to introduce into your world starting tomorrow.

How I am Planning for 2017

How I am Planning for 2017.

9 JANUARY 2017 // BIZ SH*T

January = crazy overwhelm planning time. A time of year where you can feel fired up and scared at the same time. A time of year where you see everyone else saying “Hell yeah I am ready and I have my plans sorted!” You see people revealing their word of the year “My word of the year is SUCCESS, GROWTH, ABUNDANCE.” And you start to feel worried that you are not where they are. Perhaps.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE having a word of the year (and I will share mine when I know what it is) and I WILL have a plan to guide me. We need these things to push us, to get us moving forward. But I find it crazy that we only do this once a year. Your plan needs to be looked at every single day in your business. It needs to be with you, by your side. It needs to be the thing you look at before you make any decisions in your biz. It is not a once a year thing.

And this is exactly why I don’t rush in to my planning. This is why I don’t fell left behind because I don’t have a defined plan yet for the year ahead because my plan is ever evolving. I didn’t get to the end of December and say “Oh, I have nothing to do in January now. I don’t know what I am doing or what direction I am heading in.” because the 1 Jan is the same day as any day. It is the start of a new week, a new month, just like any other. You see, you have to do this stuff when you feel ready. I have had a busy December and a busy start to the year so if I had tried to wedge my planning time into this busy crazy time, I would not have done it justice. I would not have given it the air time it needs and deserves.

Our plans are shaping our future. They are building our empire. They are moving us closer to our dream. At least they should be. They should be loved, cared for and carefully considered. They shouldn’t be a list of things that you think you “should” be doing because that is what Mrs Competitor is doing. Your plan should be made up of projects that are right for you, for your heart, for your journey and for your future.

Every-single-thing you do in your business should be there to get you closer to the big dream, or what I like to call it, your North Star. The thing high up, that you look towards, that you reach for, that lights your path. And this is why planning should not be rushed and this is exactly why I have not done my planning yet.

Now, saying all this, there is a thing called over planning which basically means when you sit and think and dream and write but don’t take any action. You plan planning and then you plan that plan a little bit more. You have to take action and you shouldn’t stop taking action. You have to keep taking action each and everyday in your business to grow.

So, after my little planning rant/love/boss moment, how AM I going to plan for my head ahead?

I like to do this when I have a clear(ish) mind, when I have some real, proper, non-interrupted time to ponder and dig deep. You see the reason so many goals don’t get reached is because they are not carefully considered. We can say “I want to earn £x this year” but if we don’t say HOW we are going to do that and what that LOOKS and FEELS like then it will not happen. It has to be done with intention and purpose. And for me, that means taking myself out of my normal routine and doing something different.

I have what I call a mini planning retreat at home. I usually do this in the week but this January, hubby is going off on a stag do for 3 days so that is a perfect time for me to really dig deep and get my planning pants on. So that is what I am going to do! This coming weekend, I am making my future my priority, Friday through to Sunday I will make plan and start to make the changes that I want to make.

Now, I know 3 days sounds extreme, and I will NOT be planning for that amount of time, I will be DOING for a lot of it. However having this uninterrupted time which I can dedicate to planning means that I can seriously get shit done.  This year is going to be a big one for me. I have big hopes and dreams and I need a plan to get me there so I know that I need to dedicate time and energy into getting this right.

But my mind won’t just switch from work mode to planning mode, I have to tease it in. So I have been thinking, dreaming and scheming for the last few weeks. I have been thinking, quietly, in reflection mode what I want my story to be at the end of 2017, what I want to have happened. I think to think of it as a movie trailer – what do I want this to be at the end of December 2017? How do I want to feel? What life do I want to be closer to living? What dream and I heading for?

There will be people reading this who think “Oh stop arsing about and take action” and I know where they are coming from – we still need to be taking action to grow. But I honestly feel that soo many biz owners sit there year after year after year in the same place because they don’t know what direction they are heading in. They don’t know what they are striving for. They don’t give it time to really matter, deep down.

Do you know what your dream is and do you have goals which align to that? That will get you there? I hope so because then you will grow, you will get there.

Now, I am off to prep for my at home planning retreat and I will let you know more about what I am going to do in that in case it is something you want to try.

Here’s to 2017 and not being overwhelmed if you feel you are “behind”

With love

Emma

5 Things you can do to kick start 2017

5 Things you can do to kick start 2017

4 JANUARY 2017 // PEP TALK

Goodbye 2016 and Hello 2017! The start of a new year leads to excitement and overwhelm in equal measure. There is a lot a pressure to feel like you should have it all sussed, all sorted and all planned out to the finest detail. Yes, you need a plan, you need a route map to follow, but you also need to be able to be fluid and follow what feels right for you.

Instead of talking about planning today, I want to give you 5 actions that you can take that will make a difference to the way you start the year. But you don’t have to do all 5. Just do the ones that feel good for you.

#1 Declutter your workspace

Make some space for your creativity to flow. If you are surrounded by “stuff” (I held my self back from saying shit there – oops, I said it!) then you will feel stressed, harassed and disorganised. These are NOT good feelings for you to have as an entrepreneur. You may not be the most super-duper organised person and you may not have an “instagramable” desk but come on – you can do better than what you have now…be honest!

#2 Set a morning routine

It is super tempting to wake up, grab for your phone, check your emails, check your Facebook and get consumed by the day before it has even started. Try, as hard as it may be, to not look at your phone for at least 30 minutes when you wake up. Instead, go make yourself a cup of hot lemon (just goggle the benefits – they are amazing!), have a stretch to wake your body up and set your intention for the day. Don’t let your emails and your social “noise” cloud or dictate your day. How many times have you let someone else set your mood for the day?

#3 Spend 15 minutes at the end of every day planning for the next

Avoid sitting at your desk not knowing what you are doing that day. It tends to leave you feeling deflated and distracted (the kind of Double D none of us want!). Instead, at the end of each day, grab your diary and list the key actions for the following day, being realistic about what you can get done in the time you have. This is a ritual that I do every day and if I fall out of it. I feel it in my productivity massively.

#4 Keep a Diary

I am sure you have a diary for your appointments and key tasks (if not – how the heck do you stay organised! Get one!) but I am talking about keeping a diary of all the stuff you do each day. This may be in the same diary or it may be an excuse to buy a new one (hello stationery porn!). At the end of 2016 when I did my review I struggled to tally up how much work I had done, how many webinars I had delivered, how much content I created, how many newsletters I sent etc. so this year I am keeping a  “DONE diary” which is a diary setting out when I have done something in my business that matters. Why not give it a go? It is a great way of appreciating what you have achieved as it is all too easy to focus on the negative and the not achieved rather than celebrating what we HAVE achieved.

#5 Make time for creativity

There are some tasks we do in our business that we have to be inspired to do – things like writing blog posts or social media updates. It is easy to feel like you have nothing to write about when you are trying to get more visible to your brides and grooms, like you are not inspired. So, make time to be! This could be dedicating an hour a week or so to actually allow yourself to spend time on Pinterest getting inspired. To actually reading a wedding magazine. To actually reading those blogs and newsletters you have stacked up in your “must read” list. Allow time for creativity – book it in your diary now and make it non-negotiable. Your best ideas come to you when you feel inspired.

So let’s kick start 2017 by trying one or all of these things. Do what feels good for you and it will flow.

With love and success

An Easy Way to Stay on Trend in the Wedding Industry.

8 NOVEMBER 2016 // YOUR COPY & BIZ SH*T

To be seen as an expert you need to keep up with what wedding trends are on the horizon. This not only makes you look super profess with your brides and grooms but it also helps you to generate new products and services that are going to be BANG ON trend which will be awesome for your wedding biz for lots of reasons (i.e. you may become the next hot thing! Imagine if you have been #1 on the rose gold trend, the geometric trend, the marble trend!).

But I get that you do not have hours each day to keep on top of what is going on in the industry so I wanted to share a really practical way that you can stay on top of trends and fuel your creativity.  Let me introduce you to BlogLovin’. I blogging love it! BlogLovin’ brings together blogs from all over the web into one handy dandy newsfeed which generates based on your interests. BlogLovin’ allows you to “Discover what’s popular in fashion, beauty, interior design, food & more. In the video below I show you how you can set up BlogLovin’ and share with you some ideas of how you can use it really effectively in your wedding business.

Also, you can add your blog to BlogLovin’ so you could be appearing in someone elses’ newsfeed (like your brides!) and think can be a a HUGE way of growing your business! That is a blog for another day, but just bear in mind, this is something you can be part of by starting to write epic blogs and doing a bit of techie stuff (like adding some code to your website – don’t freak out, I can show you how!).

So watch the video and get addicted to BlogLovin’ (just remember to NOT let it take over your life…top tip: I check my BlogLovin’ emails once a week when I am looking for some inspiration)

What barriers are you creating for yourself?

Wedding Biz Stumbling Blocks.

5 NOVEMBER 2016 // YOU & BIZ SH*T

We create our own barriers, a lot of time time. Not always. When we are worried about doing something or we are unsure, we can turn it into a massive thing, a massive hurdle. I remember when I first started learning about creating websites on WordPress, I has got myself in such a tizz about it that every time I went to do anything on my website, I was convinced I would do it wrong and cock everything up. But you know what, I was creating that barrier for myself. No one else was saying to me “You are rubbish at that!”, it was ME saying that to  ME.

It is easy to create these invisible barriers that we create in business and I want to help you to break through your current biggest barrier. The thing that is stopping you from moving forward.

I have asked fellow Wedding Biz Owners what they are struggling with right now, what is stopping them and there were 5 key areas:

  1. How can I get seen by brides in a busy industry? I feel like I am slipping into the background.
  2. How can I make my brand more consistent and less hap-hazard, and stop wasting time when I come to do anything!
  3. How can I break through the overwhelm feeling I feel most days? I know it is stopping me from growing and that makes me stressed even more!
  4. How can I get brides onto my mailing list? I know I need to send newsletters but I can’t if I have no brides to email!
  5. How do I know what stuff to write? I need to start writing better social media posts, content for my website, blogs, newsletters etc but I don’t know how to know what to write!

That is why I created the #WeddingBizBoost. 5 Action Packs for these 5 sticky points. Choose 1, take action and achieve. Simple. You can read more about it here >>>

Together we can move you forward and you can achieve! I just know it 🙂

Get Brides Early.

Get brides at the tarting stage.

3 NOVEMBER 2016 // YOUR BRIDES

Brides are fickle. To start with. They don’t know what they want, who they want (supplier wise not partner wise!). They are confused by Pinterest everyday…changing the theme, the colour, the style, the…well everything!

So you need to catch them early whilst they are in this “tarting around” mode (i.e. the stage where they will sign up to everything and anything if it is free and to do with weddings!!).

Because after the excitement of PLANNING THE BIGGEST DAY OF THEIR LIVES passes, the overwhelm kicks in. And they get scared. They get more protective. They stop giving their email address. They stop going to wedding fairs. Because they are confused. They have a break from the search and then, they start making decisions – so you need to be there when they are making those decisions so they choose you.

How do you do this? 3 simple steps:

#1 You get in front of them

#2 You offer them something for nothing

#3 You send them emails every few weeks

Simple you say, Emma! Yeah, whatever!

Let me walk you through each step.

#1 You get in front of them

#1 To get in front of brides you need to be visible and you need to be visible in the places that they are going to be. Think about your ideal bride, the bride you want to build your business around, where does she hang out? Is she on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest? Take a look at the visibility tool here so you can see where is the best place for you to spend your time.

#2 You offer something for nothing

#2 Once they have found you, you need to offer something for nothing – a little freebie, a bride present. This is sometimes referred to as an opt-in or a bribe but I like to think of it as a little gift you give your brides for them giving you their email address. Now, this is not a physical thing. It is an online, downloadable thing that you email them.  Something like a wedding planner, a checklist, a how to, a fun poster, a wedding sign – something that your brides would want.

#3 You send them emails every few weeks

#3 Once you have their email address, you send them regular newsletters. THIS is what will get you the bookings. THIS is what will get a bride to click that book now button. Why? Well let’s take a walk in the shoes of your bride for a moment. When your bride gave you her email address, she was in the “tarting” stage – she was free and easy with her email address – this was likely to be when she first got engaged. Let’s say that was 12 months ago. She will have forgotten about you UNLESS you have been popping up in her inbox with good quality content that she wants to read, with a brand that is strong and attractive and with a clear and obvious link back to what you do and how you can help her have her perfect wedding.

Newsletters are the best way* of building the know, like and trust factor with your brides and a bride has to feel at least one of these before she will book you.

Yes, you do need to know how to do them and you have to use a software for this – I recommend MailChimp because it is free and it is awesome. You cannot send build emails using your email address – this is bad for a whole host of reasons – never ever do that.

Take action

So the take away from this post really is to say, you need to get brides early and then build the know, like and trust up with them and then they will enquire with you, book you, buy from you (see post here).

*The other good way is blogging but that is a topic for another day!

Focus on getting just one bride.

I only want one bride please! Just the one! Thank you!

1 NOVEMBER 2016 // BIZ SH*T

I want you to stop looking and thinking about how you can fill your diary for next year, and the year after. Just stop. Instead, I want you to focus on getting just ONE booking. Just ONE enquiry. Just ONE bride on your mailing list. Just the ONE. Not loads, just ONE.

Why? Because then you will stop faffing and farting around and get on and do all you can to get that ONE bride to like your social media page, send an enquiry or book. It is less overwhelming, you will put yourself under less pressure. Because when you are under pressure you start pushing and you start being a little desperate (in the nicest possible way!). You start to panic and then, the mindset shift happens and you start getting into overwhelm town!  And that just leads to procrastination and you get paralysed.

Procrastination Paralysis – the worst of the business illnesses!

There is another reason that focussing just on ONE bride has aswell. It means that you start to talk to that person, you start to do everything that you can to speak to them in your posts, in your newsletters, in your blogs – they become the centre of your focus. And you know what – when you start talking to that one person in everything you do, they start to listen. And you feel more connected. Which means you do better stuff. And if one person starts to listen, others will to and they will fall into your business like little surprised wrapped up in wonderful bride sized packages.

So, my challenge for you is to stop looking at the empty diary and getting in to panic mode about what you HAVEN’T got booked in and focus on getting just ONE booking, ONE more social media like, ONE more enquiry and I bet you you will become more focussed and you will get more return back on the effort you give.

BONUS TIP: Name the person. Name your ideal bride, the person you want to build you entire business around and then, before you do ANYTHING ask yourself “Would [insert your bride name] be interested in this? Would she love this?”. If the answer is yes then you are flying! If not, then rethink it.

Here’s to celebrating your ONE bride! Go grab the wine (mine is Rioja please)

How to choose the right business planner for you

How to Choose the Right Business Planner for You.

10 OCTOBER 2016 // BIZ SH*T

It is the time of year again that I love and hate in equal measure. It’s PLANNER PURCHASE SEASON (in other words one of the BIGGEST decisions we make coming into a new year…our planner becomes our companion, business buddy and accountability partner all in one).

It’s being tempted by the new “must have” planner season. The new beautifully photographed planner. The new instagramable planner. It’s the time of year when you realise that you have spent more cash than you dare to admit on finding the perfect planner for the year ahead … again … just like last year.

HOLD UP! BEFORE YOU GO AND REMORTGAGE THE HOUSE TO FUEL YOUR PASSION FOR BUYING PLANNERS, STOP & CONSIDER.

What are you looking for in a planner?
What do you need it to have to make your more productive and efficient?
Do you work better with planners that list time slots, or that are more fluid?
Do you like to have lots of places for notes or do you prefer a simple list that you can tick down?
What have you struggled with when it comes to being productive and getting your shit done?
Will this sparkly new planner help you achieve that?

I know this may all sound a little silly, and over the top, but being efficient really is a key foundation to success in your business and using a planner that works for you and using a planner consistently will make you more productive without even trying!

I have to be honest. I am a diary tart. There I said it. I have “flozzied” with lots of different planners, diaries, journals, notebooks…the whole lot!

And this planner infidelity has taught me one thing. When I write down my tasks and block time out, I get stuff done. When I don’t, I don’t. Simple.

I know what I am looking for. I know what I need to make me the most productive version of myself. I know what I need to have by my side when I grow my business. A planner that works for me.
So, however you do it, whichever planner you decide to buy, think about what makes YOU productive and then choose a planner that goes hand in hand with that.

With passion planner love and stationery infidelity

What to do when you feel like giving up

What to do when you feel like giving up.

7 OCTOBER 2016 // PEP TALK

There is something driving you. Inside. Something that keeps you going, that lights the fire deep inside your belly. That something is the thing that made you start your business. But it can get lost, hidden, in amongst all of the “stuff” that comes along with running a business. It is too easy to get bogged down with all of this “stuff” that you should be doing, or that you think you should be doing.

But the trouble is, when you get bogged down you forget the real WHY behind what you are doing. You forget the reason you started your business. You forget what it was that sparked you. That made you say “I am going to do this. Oh my goodness, I am actually going to do this!”.  Can you remember that passion, that moment in your business when shit became real? When you actually said “I am going to start a business!”. If you can’t remember it, then it means that thing that drives you has been disconnected from what you are doing.

And when you become disconnected, things stop working together and everything feels like a struggle.  Brides stop enquiring, you lose the love for what you are doing, you feel unhappy in your business and you can feel like giving up.

But I am here today to give you a lift because I know you can do this. How do I know? Well you are serious about building your business because if you weren’t you wouldn’t have found me and you wouldn’t be reading this email right now. Deep down you KNOW that this can work, but there is something niggling away at the surface that is stopping you. Blocking you.

So how do you get over this? How can you move forward? I want you to spend some quality time looking at the reason why you started in the first place. What you wanted your business to be. Look back through old notebooks, journals of diary entries when you started your biz. See if you can re-kindle that passion, that desire. See if you can find that thing again. That thing that lights you up. Talk it through with someone, someone who gets it and understands. Someone who you can confide in that will listen with no judgement or criticism.

Until you find that passion again, that fire, you will stay stuck and I don’t want that for you.  You can grow and be awesome and be that business boss you dream off, but first you have to know it yourself.

Until you find that passion again you cannot decide which is the best route to go down for you and for your business.

I hope that this reaches out to those of you who need to hear this right now. You know I am here if you need me.

With love + heartfelt motivation

How pants can make you feel good or bad

How pants can make you feel good (or bad)

12 AUGUST 2016 // MINDSET

There are lots of things you can do that can change the way you feel. Instantly. A spritz of perfume. A nice pair of knickers. A touch of lippie.

In this off the cuff (classic!) FB Live I am talking about pants and how they reflect in your mindset and your mood.

Start a Gratitude Journal

Do this and embrace the woo woo for your growth

9 may 2016 // your mindset & biz sh*t

Today I have a little challenge for you, a challenge that you may think is Woo Woo or you may LOVE it. I have to confess that I have been in both camps. When I first started my business I thought all this gratitude malarkey was just that, malarkey, not worth time or the effort. But as I have grown I have realised just how important it all is. The thing is, if YOU are not grateful for what you have then others won’t be either. You have to honour your journey and practising gratitude on a daily basis is a great way of doing this.

So, the challenge…

…Is to start a gratitude journal. Write down something at the end of everyday that you are grateful for. It could be something small or something huge. And if you have had a rally crappy day, there will be something good that has happened – even if it is just being able to have a cuppa and sit in quiet for 5 minutes.

So, are you up for the challenge?  Go on, even if you think it is woo woo – do it and see how it makes you feel. Just for a week. And you never now, it may be a habit you stick to!

Tidy up and feel better!

Clear the crap and get more clarity.

14 MARCH 2016 // BIZ SH*T & YOUR MINDSET

So, each week I give you a challenge to help you grow a wonderful business and have a happy mind. Today we are focusing on a task that crosses both paths…having a clear space!

One of the biggest things to success is to allow success to come to you and how can it do that when you are surrounded by clutter…when you feel stressed because you have so much going on that you are not sure where to turn.

Here are 3 very simple  tasks for you:

#1 Have a sort out, just clear the crap! Throw away what you don’t need and create a happy place for you to work from

#2 Go and buy some folders or some boxes and have a sort out of the paperwork that you need to keep and spend an afternoon getting super organised/

#3 As a treat go and buy yourself a vase of flowers – wherever you work from, go an grab some daffodils or some of other gorgeous blooms and let them make your heart smile.

A simple one this week but one that will make you feel oh so much better!

5 Actions to take when you have lost your mojo

MOJO missing in action? Talk these 5 steps to get it back.

3 MARCH 2015 // BIZ SH*T

As entrepneurs we can suddenly go into panic mode – really easily.

“SHIT…I have not achieved anything that I wanted to!!!”.

And then…your MOJO leaves you stranded. Stuck. Abandoned.

At the start of the year we often have wonderful plans set out with financial targets, projects planned in and all the new regimes we get into…the exercise plans, the waking up early in the morning plans, the sticking to a schedule plans.

But, life and work gets in the way and it is easy for things to fall off the band wagon.  A few of my clients have had trouble with finding their mojo this week so I wanted to jump in and give you some tips to help you get back on track.

MOJO REHOMING ADVICE

You can lose your mojo for a number of reasons.

#1 Overwhelm

#2 Money worries

#3 Disconnection from your purpose

#4 You are just worn-out

#5 You feel alone

Let’s look at each of those in turn and take action on the one that is the reason why your MOJO has done one!

#1 Overwhelm.

Overwhelm is often the biggest cause of mojo loss…the “I don’t know what to do first!” panic feeling that grabs you and doesn’t let go.

ACTION >>> My biggest tip for dealing with overwhelm is to brain dump. Just get everything out of your mind onto a piece of paper, a notebook, a word document – however you want. I don’t care about the method, just get all the tasks and to dos and stuff out of your head. Free up some mental band width. Then, once you have it all down on paper. Walk away. Have a break. Go grab a cuppa and read a book for 10 minutes, take the dog for a walk or do some meditation. Then, come back to the braindump and start to highlight what is a MUST DO, a NEED TO DO, a WOULD LIKE TO DO. Then prioritise. Choose 2 things to focus on next and work through each of them separately, focussed with 100% of your attention (this means shut off Facebook and move your phone to the other side of the room). Then, when you have done task #1, move onto task #2. Then when you have done task #2, pick you next two tasks and do the same thing.

The other piece of advice I have for you is tapping. Have you ever tried it? Give it a go and see how it makes you feel. Check this tapping for overwhelm video out from the wonderful Ange at Epiphany Junkie:https://www.facebook.com/844718032232341/videos/948388588531951/?hc_location=ufi

#2 Money worries

Mojo lose can often happen when you are worrying about £’s in the bank. You are in money panic mode. This is something that can often knock the pow right out of you.

ACTION >>>  Before you do anything in your business ask yourself “Is this going to book me more brides?” If the answer is no, then don’t do it. If the answer is yes, then crack on. There I no point in spending hours and hours on something that is not going to get you in front of brides, that is not going to get you bookings, that is not going to get you money in the bank. To get over money worries you need to refocus. You need to move your focus from “I have no money” to “What can I do to start attracting money to me”. If you are a believer in law of attraction, then you will know what I mean here. You need to change your focus, change your language so that you are looking to the positive. When you start to focus on HOW you can get some money coming in to your business then you will start to change your energy towards that goal and you will attract rather than resist it. Want some ideas about bringing new income streams into your wedding biz {read the blog}.

The other money tip I have is to set targets. Once you know where you are in your business you can start to see where you are growing and work towards those targets.

Want to bash those money blocks today? Here is a link to a free money mindset audio from one of my business buddies Sarah Baker at No Longer a Problem which will really help you deal with those money blocks: https://nolongeraproblem.simplero.com/page/54727

#3 Disconnection from your purpose

When you forget your why it is easy to lose track. When I talk about your why I am talking about the reason you have your own business. The reason why you want to build the life that having a successful business can have.

Everyone’s why will be different. Yours may be to do with family, being able to pick the kids up from school everyday. It may be that you want to control your own future and don’t want to line the pockets of others with your awesomeness! It may be that you want to have the flexibility to work when you want to.

Reconnecting with your why can help give you a boost. It can help motivate you and make you say “Sod off self sabotaging, mojo reining thoughts – I can do this. I want to do this. I am going to build this super duper successful business because…..”

ACTION >>> To reconnect with your purpose take some time out and find YOU in your business again.  Go for a walk, read a book, step away from the business for a day and come back with a new sense of purpose. Grab a notebook and start to write down all the reasons why you are doing this. Just write away, don’t worry about grammar or spelling or any of the writing stuff. Just get your words out and get into the flow of reconnecting with your why.

Everything you do in your business MUST have a purpose. It must get you something at the end of it which will ultimately help you achieve the why.

#4 You are just worn out.

Self-care is ALWAYS the first thing to get scribbled out on the to do list when you are assessing what needs to be done. We are all guilty of this. We will always put others first.  BUT, without YOU you have no business. You are your business. So you are your most important asset. You are what is going to make or break your dream. So you have to look after you.  Because if you don’t your mojo will move on. It will say “I am not staying around here to be frazzled away! I want to go to someone who is healthy and happy and full of energy!” (I always imagine MOJO to be like Tiger off Winnie the Pooh – ready to bounce around and a shout excitedly)

I know that prioritising self-care is easier said than done.  Trust me – I do!

ACTION >>> To make sure that you do not burn yourself out schedule time in from you. Whether it is a day a month, an afternoon every couple of weeks or 30 mins each and every day. Schedule time in for some exercise or activity each and every day. Whether that is yoga, going for a run, doing the housework in super speed, walking to the shops instead of driving, mowing the lawn – exercise doesn’t always need to involve the gym!  When you are really feeling like you have lost your mojo just take a break. There is absolutely no point in sitting in front of your laptop getting more frustrated with yourself.

#5 You feel alone.

Being self-employed is hard work and it is lonely. When I started my biz I went from working in a busy corporate office to working in a quiet room in my house. For me, this was a major challenge. I loved my own company but I missed the banter or office life. I missed the chats and the giggles we would have whilst working away. As much as I nattered away to my cats at home they never responded – apart from the occasional meow (and they were rubbish at making tea!).

I went out and networked and now have a wonderful group of business BFF’s. We support and motivate each other. We meet, we are accountable and we really “get” each other’s businesses which means we know the trials and tribulations of being head honcho and general dogs body all in one go! I also discovered the power of the online world and all the other self-employed lonely entrepreneurs out there. From investing in some of these groups I have built relationships with these wonderful ladies and they are now my work colleagues. They are the people that give me that banter, that relationship and that feeling that I am not alone.

ACTION >>>  Do you have something like that? If not, my biggest tip would be to reach out and start to see where you can build those relationships because it will really help you grow, both personally and in your business. It will really motivate you to succeed and you will find that when you are feeling that your MOJO is about the open the door and jump on out, you can refocus, recharge and keep that MOJO going! Search for local networking groups, connect with other wedding suppliers – be the one to reach out.

We are creating this wonderful community over in The Wedding Biz Club now, why not take a look and see if it is for you. A monthly membership club where you can connect, learn and grow. All for £9.99 a month. This month we are talking about The power of testimonials and the community is filling with lots of wonderfully talented and inspirational wedding-prenuers>>> FIND OUT MORE

My final tip for you is to reward yourself!

When you have something that you know you need to get done, to keep the motivation, the keep the mojo going, write down what you are going to buy yourself when you have done it. It may something silly like some flowers, a new lippie or that teapot you saw in John Lewis that you fell in love with. Whatever it is, however small, however silly, make it something desirable for you – something that you want to achieve. And then when you have done that task, you can have it. Reward and recognition is a great way of getting your MOJO back.

I really hope that you found this useful.  Why not bookmark it and come back to it anytime you feel fed up and like you have lost your MOJO. We do not want MOJO-less wedding suppliers out there!

Lots of love

Emma

I haven’t got time for that!

#Rubbishbizexcuse #1 “I haven’t got time for that!”

1 FEBRUARY 2016 // PEP TALK

Do you use time as an excuse in your biz? “I haven’t got time to do that – I have got to leave in 10 minutes”.

Do you realise how much work you can actually get done in 10 minutes? Using time as an excuse will not grow your biz! Sorry to get all shouty there!). When you have 10 minutes to spare do something! I am writing this blog RIGHT NOW and I have to be out in 7 minutes. But instead of wasting that time I am making use of it and writing this blog.

What you need to start doing is having a 10 MINUTE TO DO LIST. This is a list of things that you can realistically do in 10 minutes (sorry I know that was obvious!).  You could…

>> Write a blog

>> Tidy your desk

>> Do your to do list for tomorrow

>> Create a memo for social media

>> Add some ideas into your social media content log

>> Delete some emails

>> Read your webpage from a different perspective

I challenge you to start making the use of those odd 10 minutes you have floating around your day. And see what difference it makes. I intended to write a blog today. Now I can tick that off the list! Done! Yay!

Are you ready to take the challenge? Start a 10 minute list today and STOP USING TIME AS AN EXCUSE!

Business Journalling

#Behindthescenes Why I Love Business Journaling (and why you will to).

14 JANUARY 2015 // BIZ SH*T & YOUR MINDSET

Do you record your business journey? In 2016 I am committing to keeping a business journal to help me celebrate the successes in my biz and my life and to help me get over my challenges, and the self sabotaging thoughts (which we ALL have as entrepreneurs…anyone who says they don’t is lying!).

Writing a business journal is awesome for a number of reasons, but here are my top 3

#1 Writing out your business journey helps you to remember!

It helps you to celebrate your success and it helps you deal with your challenges. As entrepreneurs we are always striving forward and we can forget where we have come from. We can forget the massive leaps we have made forward. And we can forget the mistakes we make along the way (because we A L L do make mistakes – it is how we grow!). Writing a journal, a journal that you can keep for years to come, will give you something to look back on in 10 years when you are a super duper successful wedding pro!

#2 Writing in a journal helps you to practice your writing!

You H A V E to write in business, whether it is the pages on your website, a blog, a newsletter, your social media updates. There is no getting away from it, writing is important in your business. BUT it doesn’t come naturally to a lot of people SO, like anything, you have to practice it. Practice makes perfect…and writing in a journal will help you find your voice, your brand, your personality – and that is what brides connect with and that is what makes brides WANT to book you.

#3 Writing in a journal helps you free space in your mind.

Think about our poor brains for a moment, we are using them every single milli-second of the day and they have a big old task to deal with, remembering all the stuff that we learn throughout our lives! Having an outlet where you can free some mental bandwidth will really help you to focus on what you have to do right NOW. Freeing space in your mind, and getting your thoughts down on paper, will mean that you have more space to think and more space to take action.

Watch the video below where I talk about what I am committing to do as part of my personal 2016 resolutions.

I would love to hear if you are going to do something similar, comment below. Even better, WHEN you have bought your beautiful notebook (any excuse right!) post a pic of the front cover. Mine reads “Whatever you do do it with all your heart”.

13 Marketing Strategies to book more brides

13 Marketing Strategies that will Book you More Brides.

9 NOVEMBER 2015 // YOUR PRODUCTS & YOUR SERVICES

“I don’t understand why I am not getting bookings!”. Wedding pros ask me this all of the time and my response is always the same…I ask “Ok, So tell me what you are doing right now to get those bookings.”

The trouble is the same with any business – you can work and work and work and when you stop and look you are not much further forward than before. This is normal. You are not crap. You are not rubbish. You are just focussing on the wrong things.

When I ask my clients what they are doing right now to get bookings they normally ponder for a bit and then say, “I’m not sure actually, but I know I am working my butt off! What am I going?!”.

The key to successful marketing is to know WHO you are talking to, know WHAT your MESSAGE is and then putting it in the RIGHT places!

So here I want to share with you 13 marketing strategies that you can do to move forward with your marketing.BUT. I want you to focus on two to start with and do them really really well. Stop flitting from one to another. Choose the ones that are going to give you the best return and that you are going to find the most enjoyable.

13 Marketing Strategies for your wedding business:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • Newsletters
  • Styled shoots
  • Your own website blog
  • Wedding fairs
  • Working with venues
  • Promotion on your website
  • 3rd party selling sites – Etsy and Not on the High Street
  • Guest blogging
  • Paid for advertising

So, my plea to you is to choose two to start with and do them consistently and to a high standard. Consistency builds traction and traction brings bookings.

5 Things to do This Month

5 Things to do This Month.

2 NOVEMBER 2015 // YOUR MINDSET & BIZ SH*T

I strongly believe that making small changes can achieve big things so I have put together 5 things that you can try this month that will get you closer to you goal by helping you focus and move forward. But you have to take action, otherwise there is no point (no one can do this for you, I am sorry to say).

#1 – Set your intentions

When you know what you are trying to achieve you will get there sooner because it is always in the front of your mind, at the centre of everything that you do. There is a certain power that writing your intentions down has over your subconscious – it pushes you towards them. It helps you see what you have achieved and, ultimately, you will move closer to your goals much quicker. To help I have put together a one page November planner for you (grab yours here – http://www.weddingbizbootcamp.com/november/)

#2 – Do the kettle exercise!

When we are busy, exercise is one the ‘must dos’ that falls off the list. It is all too easy for us to use the “I have no time” excuse. But I do something that makes the most of my time. So, every time you go and put the kettle on for a cuppa tea, instead of browsing through Facebook on your phone, run on the spot. For the entire time the kettle is boiling, just jump up and down, run on the spot, do star jumps – whatever – just get your blood pumping! Doing that a few times a day is better than nothing! (OK, so you make look slightly silly if the neighbours catch you but who cares!).

#3 – Make a 10 minute list

You can get a lot done in 10 minutes. But how often do you look at the clock and say, “Oh I need to go out in 10 minutes so there is no point starting anything now, I will just have a look on Pinterest.” Stop that and start a 10 minute list. Put things on this list that will only take you 10 minutes to do. Then, instead of those 10 minute tasks blocking up your main to do list (making it look super scary), you can put them on the 10 minutes list then you can work through them quicker and feel super satisfied when you tick them off!

#4 – Get testimonials from your brides

Make this a priority for the month of November. Look at the couples you have worked with over the last few months and go and ask them for a testimonial that you can then use on your website and on your social media profiles. Draft the email once and just copy and paste (changing the details of course!).

#5 – Make a date with yourself

Have a day off this month. Make a date with yourself and stick to it. Self care is oh so important but it is all too easy for it to get forgotten (just like exercise). Put a date in the diary where you are going to do nothing but something that you love. Perhaps you want to make a autumn wreath for your front door, perhaps you want to get crafty with something, perhaps you just want a guilt free day reading your book and having a duvet day. This is your permission slip to have a day off…!

I would love for you to try at least ONE of these 5 actions – making small changes has big results.

See you soon

Are you a plodder?

Are you a business plodder?

19 OCTOBER 2015 // BIZ SH*T & YOUR MINDSET

Plodding.

It’s a strange word. But even saying it feels like the meaning.

We can all just plod. Just ‘do ‘stuff’ because it feels like you are doing something. But do you ever think about what you are going achieve from doing that thing you are working on?  How is it going to grow your wedding business?

Before you do ANYTHING in your wedding business ask yourself these questions…

“How is this going to book me more brides?”
“How is this going to develop my business”
“How is this going to earn my money”

Now I am not saying that every single thing you do in your business will give you £s in the bank BUT it should be part of something that will.

You can beaver away behind the scenes in your business but if what you are doing is just that, behind the scenes, then how can brides see it? If they can’t see you they can’t buy.

We are all guilty of this. We work hard on something, for hours, days, weeks even and we post it once of social media and that’s that.

You have to make the most of what you do.

And

You have to make sure that what your doing is going towards the aim
Of booking more brides therefore money in the bank.

So, the next time you work in anything stop and think “how is this going to get me a bridal booking?”

With love and heartfelt motivation

A lesson about standing out

There was a Horse in the Beer Garden. A lesson about standing out.

15 OCTOBER 2015 // YOUR PRODUCTS & BRIDE EXPERIENCE

So me and my friend went to lunch in a country pub. We walked through the little wooden gate into a beautiful beer garden where people had spilled out from inside as it was an unusually warm October day. And there, standing in the middle of the beer garden, was a HUGE horse. Standing next to a picnic table where its owners were sitting having a drink. This made me and my friend stop in our tracks because it was something totally unexpected and totally unusual. We don’t normally come to this pub.

BUT, ye oldie locals that were sitting there didn’t even blink an eye. It was obviously a ‘usual’ thing that didn’t even spark a conversation anymore.

WHAT IS THE BLUMIN’ POINT OF THIS POST EMMA? I AM BUSY!

So, the point of this post is to say that the more people see the same old same old they become blind to it. Something that was one strange, odd and started conversations now just blended into the background. This is the same with the wedding industry. For you to stand out in your wedding business you need to do something different. You need to stand out from crowd and keep standing out from the crowd. This comes down to you and your branding and your profile. What is it about our branding that makes you YOU. What makes what you do special and unique and one of a kind. Because the likelihood is that you are one of a kind. If you are reading this blog you are probably a handmaker, a handcrafter, a designer of your products and services. Yes, lots of other people do the same type of thing but no one does what you do in the way that you do it.

So my food for thought from this blog is WHAT CAN YOU START TO DO TODAY TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD?

ACTION: Go grab a piece of paper and spend 15 minutes just scribbling, writing and brainstorming and you may find that you come up with something you can weave into what you do which makes you stand out.

BE THE HORSE WITH A UNICORN HAT ON – that would make people stand up and look.
